If I have to relocate temporarily for 3 months for an internship, do I need to inform UCIS?

Hi there, I am sorrry if this is posted in the wrong section. I based it on my status, which is a conditional permanent resident card holder.

I just got an internship offer for 12 weeks, but for that 12 weeks I'll have to be relocated to a different state (I'm trying to get them to let me work remote though). My husband will be at our address in our home state in the meantime.

Do I need to inform UCIS of my temporary change of address, or is the fact that it's just for a short 12 week placement make it not necessary? My permanent home address will still be in my home state.

Thanks for any advice!

Nope

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Yes. It's just for 12 weeks though.

So moving for paid work. The prudent thing to do is file AR-11 online, keeping your mailing address where your spouse lives. Then when you move back file AR-11 again. Note that the previous address  zip code the online form asks for is that of your previous mailing address and not your previous physical address.

I was just dubious because I am not moving there and it is just a temporary place where I will stay.

So if I fill in the form, will they send any confirmation letter to the address where my husband is in the meantime, if I keep that as my mailing address?

I only ask because I will probably be in shared accommodation and I don't want to risk UCIS letters getting lost or stolen etc.

I was convinced I only had to give a new address if I am moving there and not for any temporary stops, but you're saying that's incorrect?

Thanks again!

When you file online you will immediately get confirmation over email and several days later a second confirmation over email that shows that they know about your case.  With us we are using an attorney and the second confirmation lists her name. We’ve never received a paper confirmation

I’ve filed paper AR-11s for myself (when I had a gc) over the past decades and not once did I get a written confirmation.  I’ve yet to see a written confirmation of my paper I-865.

Thank you for sharing your story.

I guess I'm wondering if it's more trouble than it's worth because I'll literally be coming back home several weeks later and by the time they process things, they'll have to change it back again. I also understand mistakes are not uncommon, so I worry that something may go wrong and they may send stuff to the temporary address instead in the future, which would be a nightmare.

As my green card doesn't expire until end of next March, I'm not expecting any mail from USCIS and my husband is home to receive any for the short time I'm not there.

But I also understand the possible implications of not doing it either.

I personally wouldn't trust USCIS with an address change in this situation. They are notoriously bad about processing address changes as it is, and filing 2 different AR-11s in a 12 week span could mean them using the wrong address down the line. If your permanent address isn't changing and your partner will be at the old address for the 12 week period, what is the purpose of updating? You would still want mail to go to your home, correct? Also, if you are going home on your off days, even less reason to change addresses.

This is definitely legitimately what I am worried about for sure. Trouble down the line with address mess ups!

I live in NY and I will be in Virginia for those 12 weeks and that's it. My husband will be in NY.

I doubt I'll be able to make trips in between because of flight costs, but it's for such a short period.

Since you're not really moving, and your husband will stay in your real address, in my opinion, I would not send an AR-11 notifying USCIS.  Too many stories of USCIS sending correspondence to the wrong address.....

Same, I wouldn't bother. You're not permanently moving so I feel it's unnecessary. Since your husband's staying at your actual residence, he can let you know if anything important comes from USCIS.

Even if you google "AR-11 temporary address", you get conflicting information.

eg:

https://berardiimmigrationlaw.com/ar-11-tips-and-pointers-2/

States "You do NOT need to include temporary addresses as long as you maintain your present address as your permanent residence and continue to receive mail there;"

https://immigrationlawnj.com/ar-11-four-things-must-know-immigration-rules/#change-address-necessary

States : "DO I REALLY HAVE TO FILE A CHANGE OF ADDRESS AR-11 EVERY SINGLE TIME I MOVE? EVEN IF IT’S TEMPORARY?

Yes. You do. In order to avoid any problems with USCIS you must file an AR-11 within ten days after ANY move

YMMV

Difference here is temporary (1) vs permanent (2).

OP shouldn't change address...I visited my country three times, 1 month duration each time and toured a few states during my immigration journey. Never changed address.

However, I did do AR-11 when I switched residences..Basically permanent relocation from one part of Houston to another.

Use common sense.
