Open a bank account without SSN

I just arrived in the U.S. with the I-551 status (temp for green card, that's valid for one year) and I am waiting for the SSN to be mailed to me. I tried to open an account at Chase today and they needed me to provide the SSN or I would need to sign the W-8BEN form, which I don't think is correct as I should be signing W-9 form instead. Anyone had the same issue? Do I have to wait until I get my SSN?

Both are incorrect for your situation. Either one would take longer that the SS card anyway. You should just wait for your SS card. Did you apply for the SSN in person or through the immigration process. If you did not apply in person, you should call the SSA to make sure that it is being processed. They do drop the ball sometimes.
