Yes, the loser is an adult and committed his crimes as an adult.

However, are the parents also somehow or somewhat culpable?

If parents were involved and tried everything but failed to reform their child, that's one thing.

If parents were negligent in their child-rearing and it led to this, is that another thing?

I understand that he was an adult at the time he pulled the trigger.

 

The hang up for me is that both parents were aware of the son's mental issues and did nothing. If anything (like several other killer's parents) encouraged and provided access to the guns that led up to this point. The father is..... well his comments tell you all you need to know about what sort of irresponsible person he is. I have seen others commenting that the kid has been a member of groups that had violent activities in the community for several years, and believes he may have had co-conspirators, or at least individuals taking advantage of him mental state to urge him on. What did the father believe that his nutcase son would use the weapons for?

All good points.  Part of me questions why this thug even needed high-powered rifles in a Chicago suburb (not very good home defense weapons), but ultimately that doesn't matter; be bought them legally and that's his right.

But yes, the family needs to be held accountable for the lack of intervention, as do the FBI, who had this guy on their radar already.  

And he admitted to the shooting.  There is no need for a long, drawn-out & expensive trial.  Just put him to death.  Guarantee he won't do it again.

 

 

Also, ICYMI, the death toll is now up to seven.

After reading about an ABC interview with the father and this article about both parents this morning.... yeah these people did not belong caring for any children ever. Both just despicable people.

Yep, real winners.  Still doesn’t explain everything as there are a lot of parents like these two or the couple in Michigan, and the kids don’t all end up as mass murderers.
