Define "assault rifle".  I guarantee you it's NOT the actual definition of assault rifle.

But at any rate, here's what I learned today:

Laura Ingraham just confirmed it on her show. One call that brought police to the shooter's home was because he was threatening suicide, the other time a family member claimed this wacko threatened to kill everyone in his family. Police confiscated 16 knives from him, plus a sword (!). But no arrest was made. Threatening to kill people is a crime, last I checked.

Look for the officials in Highland Park and Illinois to keep pushing the "We must ban guns!” agenda, in an attempt to distract from their own incompetence. No way this nut should have allowed to buy a gun. If the existing laws had been followed, this wouldn’t have happened.

Sounds like another one that can be added to the list of mass shooters that were under the care of some mental health professional, and possibly on some form of pharmaceutical.

That was KNOWN about beforehand.  Did you see the video where he was talking to the FBI?  Not literally of course, but he had reason to believe they were on to him.

No evidence that he was under the care of any professional or on any drugs. He has had mental problems since a young boy, the school officials tried to intervene, the parents took him out of school and refused to get him care. He was home schooled. Based on what I've heard about these parent's lifestyle, the home school that was used... that means he largely 'taught' himself. That means he received little education grounded in any reality, and belonged to internet communities that celebrated schizophrenia and embraced his delusions.

This is yet another case where I just wonder when are we going to start holding parents accountable for the actions of their children. The father is the one that cosigned on the guns, despite knowing his threats and unstable health. He picked this event as his target, but it seems he had others in mind that he had been scoping out for some time - that included synagogues, at a time when antisemitic publications had been circulating in the widely Jewish neighborhood. I have to wonder if that is connected and what other groups he may have been playing around with.

According to here, he was handled by a mental health professional at least at some point in the recent past.

I have seen it confirmed by several sources that the gun he used was illegal in Highland Park and has been for 9 years.

So a lot for the Authorities to answer.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Legislators and activists have derided the weakness of US gun control laws following the Fourth of July mass shooting in which the alleged gunman was allowed to legally purchase weapons despite multiple alarming prior encounters with law enforcement.

Read down where it mentions they have been banned since 2013

I do not know the brand, S and W was mentioned as well not sure it matters.

It appears they have very strict gun laws, but if you are not going to enforce them….

That was likely a crisis councilor sent to the home with the police due to the claim of wanting to commit suicide. However they found no cause because he denied wanting to harm himself or others. Even when they removed the knives from the home, the father lied and stated they were his. This kid needed proper help long ago. If details about the parents are true, I wonder what happened to the rest of the siblings.

I haven't seen anything about the guns being illegal, except for vague claims. He purchased all of these guns while underage but legally, so the father signed a document attesting that he would be liable for anything that happened. And the father knowingly helped him obtain these guns and ammo despite knowing his mental health history, that he he claimed to want to hurt himself or others (and lying to the police about it), and attested on the form about the son being of sound mind. Clearly the father should be in some sort of responsibility here. Since the son and father had previously denied to police about wanting to kill others, there was no red flag in place for the police to deny his gun applications.

No.  He is 21.  An adult.  The ONLY thing the father sponsored was his gun license at the age of 19.   The guns were legally purchased, though locally banned, if one is dumb enough to fall for the lie of them being "assault rifles".  An assault rife is a fully-automatic  weapon.  Those haven't been legal to purchase (except in rare cases) for decades.

Quote

In April 2019, an emergency call was made after the gunman had attempted suicide, said Covelli.

In September of the same year, police were dispatched to the gunman’s home after he allegedly threatened to “kill everyone” in his family. During that visit officers collected multiple weapons from the gunman’s home: more than a dozen knives, a sword and a dagger.

According to Illinois’s “red flag” law, both instances could have disqualified him from legally obtaining the five firearms he allegedly used during Monday’s mass shooting.

The Illinois state police said, however, that despite the gunman being flagged as a “clear and present danger” following the September 2019 incident and his history of threatening violence, state police closed the case because the gunman did not have a gun owner ID or a pending application to own a gun.

An additional barrier under Illinois law is that police, relatives, roommates or friends must also first ask a judge to seize a person’s guns.

In December 2019, the gunman successfully applied for a gun license when he was 19 years old, with his father sponsoring his application.
