US passport services might have lost my wife's naturalization certificate

Maybe not the right forum but I thought people who recently obtained citizenship next step would be a passport.

Wife got her  citizenship this year and applied for passport.  Received the passport but now over 6 weeks and still no return of certificate.

I emailed them about it a few days ago.  I then called and was given an address to request the return.

What happens if it was lost in the mail since they return using 1st class mail which is garbage for an important and costly document as that. I really don't want to shell out $600.  I do not have one because vengeful ex wife destroyed or lost it moving out.

Anyone with experience with this situation??

they are returned per your fee to do this in separate mailings

so, give it some time

if USPS says they lost it ,   put in a claim/  they should pay the fee to reimburse the document fee

i figure u put in a claim,  and they will find it fast

USPS lost my kid's original birth certificate returned by the passport office this year. It even showed up in informed delivery in the email but never got delivered. Upon inquiry, USPS took 3 months to finally respond that they searched n searched but couldn't find the lost mail. Luckily it was only 30 bucks for replacement so no big deal.

Hopefully they find it or are in the process of mailing. May be there is some way of asking for the replacement cost.

Out of curiosity how is your ex wife connected to your current wife's naturalization certificate?

The dmv would be ok with either the passport or naturalization certificate. Check back with them again.

Often the certificate is sent without tracking in a regular manilla envelope, so it may be hard to get anything back in terms of reimbursement. The passport agency will claim they shipped it, USPS will claim they never received it. If you do get it shipped with tracking and it happens to disappear during the shipping, then go to your local USPS and have then run a GPS scan on it. They can see where it was last scanned and try to locate it from there. The GPS scan is also important if your item shows "delivered" but it was delivered to the wrong address, USPS will then try to retrieve it from the address it was delivered to.

It is still on the delivery window, i know it sounds ridiculous but some people waited for 60 days to receive theirs back. Mine took a little over a month to show up. The passport agency actually held my certificate for 30 days even before they mailed it back to me.  If it gets lost the passport agency will not cover the loss (it is stated on their website), USPS will not cover it either, you will be on your own for the reissue fee with USCIS. Unless you really need the certificate for special clearance for a federal job a passport is all you really need. even if you petition somebody you don't need the original as long as you made a copy before you mailed it out for the passport.

  • 2 weeks later...

Good news update.  7/19/2022.  I checked mailbox this evening which I normally do not do since important mail goes to my office.  This did not show up USPS informed delivery service this morning

Wife's certificate was in the mailbox.  I sent a letter July 1st.  They sent the certificate out I think yesterday or day before.
