Vacation in Tunisia with fiancé

My fiancé is from Algeria and I’m the US citizen. We met in person for the first time in January of this year. (50 days together.) We started the K-1 process in March.

We are wanting to take a vacation together in Tunisia at one of the All-inclusive hotels in Sousse. My only concern is that we might run into problems with the hotel because we are not married and my fiancé is from North Africa. One of the hotels I was considering was the Movenpick but then I read a review that an unmarried couple was asked to show their marriage certificate.

I would like to be able to use the hotel as evidence for the immigration process so having both our names on the hotel information would be important.

For people with experience staying at or have knowledge regarding these hotels, do you see us running into problems regarding this?

Anecdotally, my husband (fiancé at the time) and I were denied check-in at a hotel in Qatar unless we got separate rooms. When I had researched before reserving, I recalled that a marriage certificate was required for Qatari national citizens but found expats wouldn’t need to be married. As it turned out, since my husband held a Tunisian passport, meaning he was from a Muslim country, they required a marriage certificate for us to stay together.

Thank you p&g. Yes, it seems to be rather hit or miss. I would hate to risk being denied and needing to pay for an additional room.

Sadly, as I’m sure you know, there aren’t many options for countries do to the limited visa free travel they can do.

Do you or anyone else have a suggestion of a vacation we can take that doesn’t have this sort of restriction regarding unmarried couples and hotel rooms? Maybe even a cruise?

Try going to an Airbnb or go to Morocco. They are more liberal and won't ask for a marriage certificate for non-Moroccans

Sorry,   we needed marriage certificate in Morocco when we traveled and we had family with us

for muslim countries (those that the main governing body is Islamic ,  a marriage certificate is needed to even rent apartment or share hotel room)

get 2 rooms

or go to Lebonan,   Jordon or turkey

yes, unmarried couples can stay in hotels in Turkey. There is no specific regulation in Turkish law regarding this issue.

I’ll bring up some of the suggestions to my fiancé and see what he thinks. However, it’s sounding like it’s just going to be a lot easier for me to return to Algeria. We will put off “couples” vacations until after we are married. It’s unfortunate.

But on the plus side, it would be really lovely to see the family again.

We went to Turkey (only came across one airbnb that wanted a marriage certificate for couples) and Indonesia. No issues checking into airbnbs and hotels and no issues with both our names on the reservation.

My fiance is also from Algeria and we have rented an apartment in Algeria twice together with both of our names on the lease but on my last day there we stayed at the Marriott in Algiers and they did not ask us for a marriage certificate. There is Sousse Pearl Marriott Resort and Spa in Tunisia, maybe you can be allowed to stay there together without the marriage certificate.

Thank you Becky. That’s something to consider.
I’m also thinking about going to a travel advisor and seeing what kind of options they can can up with.

You're welcome and good luck to you.

I stayed in the same hotel with my  fiance in Cairo.  We registered and stayed in separate rooms. I was escorted to Egypt by my Wali. No questions were asked.  I showed USCIS my airplane ticket stubs and numerous photos of us at the hotel, stores, museums, and tourist sites. His Visa was approved.

A great resource book that helped me was called the Fiance Visa: Step by Step. It may help. I have attached a link. Best Wishes. -Robin
