I am VERY fortunate.  The fact that I have been able to rise above poverty, starting "from the bottom of the pile" and rising above all the adversity thrown my way, and to achieve a position in life that I only dreamed of as a child, all without a single visit to someone who professes to know more about my condition than I do, is certainly something to be thankful for.

I actually believe ANYONE can do it, if they only try. I am not special, just driven, and I only blame myself for my mistakes or setbacks, not others.

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

When it boils down to it - people are people and many have struggles. Some of those struggles leave severe wounds that if left to fester have consequences. Mental illness has little to do with political ideology (unless one's unhealthy obsession with certain subjects or persons manifests itself) and more to do with the way someone is raised, their environment, and how willing they are to admit they have a problem and to seek assistance. Until you have witnessed the struggle or been their yourself you have no idea.
