Applying for SSN after I-485 application

My wife came over on a K1 visa from México in September 2021. We submitted her I-485 paperwork and had checked the "I need a social security number" box. She did have her biometrics appointment March 24, 2022 but no new news aince then. We are hitting other annoyances with her not having a SSN. Are we able to expedite just the SSN portion? I realize now that applying separately for the SSN beforehand would have been the better option (we didn't want to deal with the name change on the SSN) Can we apply for her SSN now seperately, even though it is in process on the I-485 as well?

Nope. She will only get her SSN.  when the AOS /GC is in hand or she has an EAD if you applied for that concurrently .

So, if I am trying to file for my 2021 taxes and finally get my return, could we apply for an ITIN and hope/expect to get that before the EAD and SSN so that we can file jointly?

You send ITIN application documents together and joint tax return filing together in the same package, not separate.

Alternatively, you can do marriage filing separate for 2021 and then amend to joint filing after your wife gets SSN if that gives you bunch of money back.

Thanks! I didn't realize that the ITIN was filed concurrently with taxes, for some reason I thought it would be just like applying for a SSN. I'll look into benefits of doing separate and ammending, vs filing for ITIN at the same time.
