Hello!

I will be eligible to apply for citizenship in a few months. I currently petitioned my wife and we are awaiting interview at the embassy in Manila, Are there any advantages to change my status at this stage of the process, or will it delay the process further?

Thank you to all who will answer.

Are there any derivative children on the petition? This is the usually the key factor leading to problems. If only a spouse, it usually goes faster if you’re a citizen. However - you may not complete the process before she gets to interview anyway - when did you file? What service center? Are you approved/DQ? What FO will you apply for citizenship at?

Yup, we’re already DQ since Aug 2020.

No kids.

I don’t think it’ll do a lot to be honest, but the situation in Manila embassy now is that they’re only processing expedited family preference cases. I applied for an expedite sometime last year, but it was denied.

When are you eligible to submit your n400?

I see you’ve listed SF as your FO. Currently listed processing times for n400 for them are 16.5 months. (As an aside, my family and I went through SF for N400 at different times and found the listed times to be quite accurate.)

I will be eligible by Sept this year.

So you’re probably looking at early 2024 for your oath ceremony. I’d be surprised if she hasn’t already got her green card by then.

But let’s say assume that she hasnt been called for interview by then, will my citizenship affect her current petition? I mean, do I need to refile everything to a CR-1 petition instead of F1?

No, you just contact NVC with the updated info to upgrade the petition.

btw she is F2A (F1 is adult child of citizen)

Also if DQ since 2020 you must have been married longer than 2 years by now so it would be IR not CR.

Yes. We got married 2017. I filed her papers 2018 and got DQ 2020.

I’m just super tired of waiting. :(
