I can’t believe that a person with that thinking process gets to decide on somebody’s immigration status. Terrible.

That's definitely not the intent. No one should have a child just to prove something.  But a child is among the heaviest of evidences uscis considers. I am saying this based on the first hand experience in the interview.

A pretty senior and not to happy/ friendly looking IO took our interview. As soon as we presented the birth cert as first evidence, it was like he stepped into happy land. Said that's all he needs as well as "(lets assume) Even if the marriage was fake at some point, the fact that there is a child made it real"

That's fairly old school thinking...

People can easily have a one night stand, conceive and never meet again.

For all the IO knows... the beneficiary and petitioner could have an arrangement where the beneficiary is a sperm donor in exchange for a GC.

Conceiving a child only proves two people are fertile.

And people having a kid because they think that would be the best type of evidence when their relationship is shaky is a horrifying idea.

You are thinking of a situation that almost never happens. Child is a very strong supporting evidence on top of other things such as property, pictures, affidavits, physical and financial co-mingling. Things that you normally send out.

No one is suggesting that its the only evidence a person needs to abuse the system and get away with it.

I think a child in a marriage makes the adjudicating officer's lives easier as they don't have to dig as deep into a secondary evidence.  Nonetheless, I would expect that their training would allow them to sniff out the fraudulent cases, even if there's a child present.

I would not think that all a couple has to show is a birth certificate, they still have to do their due diligence, but, apparently, a baby sure makes things easier.

That being said, each case is different, and each officer is different, and, sadly, a lot of discretion is built in into the system.

I wonder if they ever found fraud when a couple had a child. Like, I'm genuinely curious if there has even been a case like that.

discretion

and racial profiling, too. I don't think childfree cases like ours gets as much scrutiny as when the petitioner is from Nigeria or Ghana

From their perspective, they want to deal with as few 'red flags' cases as possible.  If they can remove the red flag from a case, it makes their life easier.

I've been watching a certain show on TLC and it appears every other couple goes through the K1 process because of an OOPS pregnancy but they barely know each other.

I'm feeling a little cynical about intentions these days ;)

But, I will agree having children is strong evidence... and an IO even suggested it to a couple at their AOS interview:

"Another thing that just kind of rubbed me the wrong way happened at the end of the interview. He told me the evidence we had brought with us was sufficient for the conditional greencard, but for ROC we would need to show a lot more. I half jokingly replied that we had not planned on buying another house and were hoping the cars we had purchased would last us a few years at least, so what in the world kind of "a lot more" evidence could possibly be expected? To my shock the reply was something to the effect of not to worry, if I was pregnant by the time the ROC interview came around we shouldn't have any problems. I don't even remember how I responded to that one, but I truly find it shocking that an immigration official suggested I have a baby to bolster my immigration case. Is this something that has happened to others here?"
