I love Canada also; we would love to live in Canada. Our decision is mainly b/c of his job... which he loves and I don't want him to have to give up if he doesn't have to. But it's my family in Canada that we're both going to miss most.

We're planning to do the same...and my husband has never lost his Canadian spirit. I'm the USC but to be honest, I'm Canadian in my heart. The only reason he came here was because I couldn't go there because of the joint custody I have to endure with my daughter's biological father. Other than that, my daughter and I would have moved to Canada in a New York minute. :)

I don't think you can loose being a Canadian.. it's too deep in your core, and our values/outlook are just different enough. I know part of what my husband loves so deeply about me is that I am Canadian, and that I do feel the way I do about issues, that I laugh at the things that I do, and that I do talk a little differently.

My mother immigrated to Canada when she was 8. My mother remembers thinking the 1st day of school "I have got to fit in and not stick out with my accent etc", and she immediately began to loose the "English" in her. My other aunties (older & younger) didn't do the same thing. Now with all of them in their 50's I see so much more "British" in my Aunties, and so much "Canadian" in my mum. She still has some qualities from England, but in her heart I know she's Canadian (she's also the only one of the 3 sisters who took out Canadian citizenship). My mother chose to be Canadian.

I know in many ways I have to "fit in" in this country, that sometimes i hold back my views, or have to change what I say to be more "American". It's part of what moving to a new country is. But I know in my heart I will always be a Canadian, and damn proud of it too :)

For me, it came down to a choice between waiting for a Canadian job where the decision would not be made until after New Year, and a definite job offer in Atlanta starting on Jan 2 (on which I would receive the offer letter and airticket by Christmas--I didn't due to the sender's use of Express Mail instead of FedEx; the lack of knowledge of Canada Post caused a delay).

I don't think you can ever take the "Canadian spirit" out of a Canadian. I moved to the US as that's a decision we made based on my husband's job. We talked about retiring back to Canada some day, but that's still a few years away. It does get easier to live here once you're here. We all miss our family and friends back in Canada. I still have a few REALLY bad homesick days. I cry, have a nap, then I'm okay for another month. hehe

One thing to remember, is that you'll always be Canadian, but also try to remember that home is where the heart is. Sorry about the stupid cliques, but I really do believe it's true. I'd live wherever we had to, to be together.

I don't think Gene would ever want me to lose any of my Canadianism either. That's a part of why he fell in love with me!

For one, I will never lose the "Canadian spirit" in me. I may look like an immigrant, but as a citizen from birth, I've been raised in this amazing country and it doesn't leave the heart.

While it was my choice to leave, I did it because Bee's family is amazing and I knew how hard it was for him to leave. Bee and I hope to move back someday, preferably just across the border as his parents will probably want us to visit quite often. ^_^

Nini - Vancouver BC, Canada (she's the one who does the forum thing)

I sometimes fear that... and wonder if my childten will choose canada to be in

A.

I can only speak from my experience. When my Son was 4 we moved to New Zealand. Lived there for 8 years. This didn't make him any less Canadian and now he doesn't want to leave Canada (yes he wants to travel all over the place but this is his home). At this point he isn't even interested in me sponsoring him to the U.S. either.

We are moving to the U.S. as my Sister and her family live there and really we are just going for the experience, for some fun, maybe open a small business, change of scenery and less snow (although with temperatures nearing 30 this week in Calgary and lots of humidity that I am no longer used to.....)

On the other hand, when I was a child we lived in Singapore for many years. Went to an American school there and identified with Americans and kind of made ourselves honorary Americans! My Sister moved to the States right after graduation and has never returned to live in Canada. My other Sister has now lived there for about 8 years (Husband is working there on a Nafta visa) but she strongly identifies herself as Canadian.

So that is kind of a potpourri of how different people identify with their new surroundings I guess.

I know in many ways I have to "fit in" in this country, that sometimes i hold back my views, or have to change what I say to be more "American". It's part of what moving to a new country is.

Don't ever do this. One of the great things about the US is that you can express yourself. Say what's on your mind. Frankly thats what my country needs more than anything is more dialog on the issues. As the USC I don't ever want my fiancee to lose her Canadianism. It makes her her and is one of the reasons I love her so much.
