They have a copy of it not the actually passport and No I did not contact the police I don't think it much they can do about it to be honest.  Even if I file a report the most they would do is have the paper on file. People scam people everyday to them that's not a major crime

Definitely file a police report. They do care. My husband and I lost money in a scam about a year ago and the police are taking it very seriously. They said they won't let it go, and they've called us since then to reassure us that they haven't forgotten. I think it's important, in case you do have problems down the road because of this, to have the documentation a police report would provide.  You can, and should, also report it to the FTC here: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/ and open an account with IdentityTheft.gov: https://www.identitytheft.gov/.  You can report the stolen info and they will advise you of the many things you can do to protect yourself. Both these helped us regain our peace of mind. Good luck!

If I were you, I’d make a police report to protect your husband against potential fraud. At least if  there’s a report and someone tried to steal his identity or do something stupid, you would have a report stating what actually happened.

About a month ago I zelled $1500 to retain a lawyer this person has my case number my husbands passport everything pertaining to our case. Come to find out this person wasn't a lawyer they lied and stole my money and has since ghosted me.  I have the option to dispute the payment through my bank and get my money back, but I'm afraid that this person will try and retaliate and log back into my case and possible delete information to mess up and prolong our process which we've been waiting a year and a half for our interview. Can anyone give me any advice on how to handle this situation? I've tried calling the USCIS, but they are no longer taking any calls......and please don't judge me or say anything negative on my status If you can't give me any positive input then please politely keep scrolling with all due respect.......Thank you

If this is a scammer then they would not be able to mess up your case. Use your receipt number to follow up on your case by yourself.  You don't need a lawyer. You can communicate with nvc and uscis by yourself and watch your own progress. The lawyer doesn't make it go faster or approve anything.  It's solely the discretion and decision of the immigration.
