I've been waiting for my Social security card for five weeks now (applied in Somerville MA). I phoned this morning and they said that if it doesn't come in six weeks I need to phone USCIS and see what the hold-up is at their end.

Grrr!

It makes me worry that there's something wrong with our Immigration status if they're taking this long to verify that I'm entitled to the card. Does it often take this long?

On top of that USCIS have lost my original medical exam results from the UK, so I have to go for another and the whole thing is on hold again until I take another medical exam here.

It's like banging your head on the wall sometimes!

When did you enter the country, it takes a few weeks for DHS to update the system that SSA uses to confirm an alien's status.

Not having a timeline makes it hard to understand your situation.

Sorry folks, I've updated my timeline now.

I entered the country in December and applied for the social security card with my EAD as evidence on 12th June.

I'm in AOS limbo still at the moment, waiting for The Interview.

Also we moved house just after the EAD was issued. I changed the address for the AOS petition online (as well as filing the proper form to NY) but I didn't bother changing my address for the EAD petition, as it had already been issued. I'm wondering if that was a mistake now! If they check my EAD details, they're going to get a different address from the one I applied for the SS card with, even though it was the correct address when the EAD card was issued.

I was reading up about the verification that SSA offices do if they can't find you in SAVE when you're in person. They file for a request for verification from USCIS by snail mail... and we all know how slow USCIS is.

If the office is not that far, try going in person and have them check your status while you're there. I just went today to get my SSN and was told I wasn't in the system. I was told to come back in 5 weeks if I haven't heard anything from them and they'd check their system again while I was there.

I just checked your timeline and you were approved and received the EAD same time I did.

Okay now I'm confused. You applied on June 12 for your EAD but your timeline says you didn't get it until July?

Thanks Misa! I called this morning and they said I wasn't in the system. I guess I'll just go along again in a week if there's still no news.

I might have known the "will take up to four weeks to process" line was a big lie with USCIS involved! ;)

Well, my SS card took about 5 weeks to be sent to me (for the first time), then to change the name and blablabla i had to go back with my green card and it took about 2 weeks.

Maybe they are just checking your status, thats why mine took longer for the first time than this last time i went there!!

Yeah, I hope it takes ONLY 4 weeks but I'm not holding my breath! This is the form that the SSA office files by snail mail to USCIS: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/g-845.pdf

On the USCIS site, they mention that manual verifications usually take 20 days. Seems a little ambitious for USCIS! :P
