The member in the thread referenced did not file before their designated timeframe, the system dated their application incorrectly.  No one really knows why, and eventually the member was naturalized, but it was a major headache for them.  My wife filed by mail, and was finished in a little over 5 months, so to answer the OP's question is that either process is about the same speed and is much more dependent on the local office that will be handling the processing, not from the method of submission.

My son filed online and his cousin filed via mail submitted with a difference of 5 days

 

Their interview date is 3 weeks apart.

I have help to file many petitions.  I personally prefer online but when you file paper you can include a cover letter and include everything that you want in the order that you want.   Send it via USPS and use return receipt.

I included a cover letter in my online application that outlined what I was submitting, no issues with that - they can figure out which file refers to what.
