After entering the states with CR-1...

We finally made it to the states, my husband on a CR-1.

1.) We checked the Social Security box on that one form, so will they send it to us automatically? How long should we wait before contacting SSN?

2.) Can Conditional Residents leave the country during their 2 years? I have friends that had to wait until the husband was a Permanent resident before leaving, but when my husband passed through immigration they said he could come and go as if he were a permanent resident. What is the truth?

3.) Will we get a green card in the mail? If it doesn't come, how do we go about getting one?

4.) In my husband's passport the entry stamp is between two pages and didn't stamp well. For my insurance company I need to prove my husband didn't pay taxes (and showing his entry date proves he wasn't here last year). I sent them a copy of the visa/stamp and they said they wouldn't take it because it's not clear. They want me to get a formal letter saying his entry date from immigration. How do I do this? It is even possible?

Thanks for all the help, and good luck to you all!

Congrats!

A conditional permanent resident IS a permanent resident for virtually all purposes, including travel, employment, and eventual naturalization. So yes, since he's a permanent resident, he can leave and return just like any other permanent resident. Be aware that, if he's planning any trips longer than 6 months, he may need to take some steps to make sure he isn't considered to have abandoned permanent resident status. And also, if he's gone more than 6 months, that WILL break his "continuous residence" time as it's counted toward eventual naturalization, if he's interested in that. But for trips shorter than 6 months, it's easy.

The SS card should come automatically if you checked both boxes. It may take a few weeks to a month. It's definitely not 100% reliable. I've seen some people post that it never came for them, while lots of others got it with no problems.

The Green Card should come in a couple of weeks. That will have a "resident since" date on it, giving the date of entry, and may be easier for your insurance company to accept than the mangled entry stamp. I can't imagine you'll be able to get anybody in the bureacracy to respond to a non-standard request for a formal letter giving an entry date, or at least they won't respond before the Green Card is in hand. You may also get one or more "Welcome to America" letters (we got three or four, with identical information), that may contain the entry date, as well.

  • 1 month later...

We waited about 5 weeks for the SSN, and then I headed down to the Social Security office. They told me that immigration had never sent them the forms for the issuance of a new SSN, so they processed it right then and there. I went back the following day and they were able to tell me my husband's SSN, and within a week we had the official card in the mail.

They said that I should have only waited 3 weeks since entering the USA before contacting the Social Security office.

Also we got the green card in the mail without trouble, about 4 weeks after arrival to the USA.

We also received about 4 "welcome to the USA" letters with the exact same information, just a different mailed date.

What's that all about?

Anyway we're here and my husband is registered to start ESL and has just gotten a job! yea!

use the green card and welcome letter's as proof of how long he has been here for your insurance.

You might also include a copy of the interveiw letter as proof.
