This is an optimization problem with several constraints. American Airlines credits are particularly difficult to use flying out of Accra and Africa in general because American Airlines doesn’t come to Africa [only to Morocco] except through affiliates like BA and when the option to book through American Airlines (on BA flights) exists it’s twice as expensive as if you booked it directly with BA.

First plan would be to try to get the credits extended however that’s only going to be extended for a few months and you indicate it’s going to be at least a year and half before your partner will be able to use it to come directly to the USA. Still buys you time. The chat option is helpful so you’re not kept on hold forever like they do.

American Airlines until January 31 allowed you to gift your credits to someone else, alas that ship has sailed.

Just another random guy from the internet with an opinion, although usually backed by data!

Or

have him fly from Ghana to Frankfurt Germany (which he’ll still need a transit visa for) using the credits

then from Frankfurt to Canada for a layover (another transit visa 😫😫😫) then from Canada to Jamaica with British airways or air Canada.

Is your plan to torture the poor gentleman 😂🤣😂. That’s a hellacious itinerary.

One of the main reasons is also because he has $2000 unused credits from american airline from a cancelled fight from 2020.

If the flight was canceled due to Covid and was purchased with a credit card, I’ve had good success getting cash refunded to the credit card for a couple trips. It wasn’t easy but then I’m very dogged.

No it wasn’t

they said that the credits had to be used

as in buy a ticket and have completed the flying by December of 2022

That’s why we were trying to do which is why I didn’t use it last year. The credits were supposed to expire last year October I extended it until December 2022.
seeing that the spouse visa is still taking long time he wont be able to use them this year.

I was hoping to find a solution that includes him using the credits this year but I’m finding more problems than solutions.

and thank you

My two cents, in order:

1. Wait till when credits are about to expire and then call airline and ask for extension. You may get away with it dur to COVID. I know, we are past it BUT still in recovery.

2. If above fails, wait till credits are about to expire, like 3 days, then book a future flight. Since they expire in Dec, I'll book flights in November next year (I think booking is allowed 11 months in advance). You can even use the points + extra $$ to book refundable tickets for Nov 2023..🤷🏽‍♂️

She should double check with the airline if she can do this. One of the airlines I book with, requires travel be completed by the expiry date, not just booked.

Exactly as you stated.

they wanted the travel competed by December.

Not just  booked, I verified this many times with American Airlines
