I just came in back to the country (USA) with extension and green card (expired). The process at the air port was nerve recking.though  I submitted the required documents I was asked to go to that little waiting room  for my green card to be processed.May be it was  normal because of my extension letter. But that was not a good feeling after being in USA  for a while and it's your primary and permanent home just to be treated like that at the boarder. Yes it could be the process but mane, it is not a good feeling being asked to wait there after finger print taken. I  just decided not to leave US again without having become a citizen.

Secondary inspections are normal for that situation.

US citizens get secondary inspections all the time.

I have   read that since most of not all global entry kiosks have moved to facial recognition and thus no gc or passport needed, people with expired GCs and valid extension letters can use Global Entry (GE).  Try that. Since you won’t be traveling per your OP you’ve lots of time to get GE.

I will try that. Also , I came in with my wife and she is a Citizen.., she was never checked...  no finger print taken. She even asked and they said no. Yeah in Chicago...  customer has just one line for all visitors, Citizens,LPR all used a single line.

It’s been policy since the Obama administration (but the rule created by the Bush II administration)  that green card holders and other aliens are finger printed with Canadians being the exception (though some CBPOs illegally fingerprint Canadian GC holders).

Citizens generally are not fingerprinted unless they have GE.

Surely apply for Global Entry. It scans your face and print out a piece of paper, then you can just walk right in. I've been traveling everywhere with the expired card and extension letter, no problem.

Do you know if it is possible to apply for Global Entry while waiting having a pending I-751? It asks for GC expiry date which is obviously in the past. Can one use CG expiry date based on the extension letter? Anyone have any first hand experience on this?

I would use the expiration date per the extension letter and see what happens.

Use the the date on your actual green card. That's where you have expiration date. Extension letter does not have expiration date field.

It won't take it. The system need future expiration date at least one month out from the current date.

I could not figure out how to apply for Global Entry while I had expired 2-year card + my extension letter. I was trying to insert all sorts of dates, but in the end I just had to bite the bullet and wait to apply until I got my ten year GC.

After applying for GE, it surprisingly only took something like three months before I was conditionally approved. Of course there were no appointments before 2023 any interview location I could get to, so I'll just have to do the interview when I return to the US from my next trip abroad.

Getting there, slowly but surely...  (I hope )

When USCIS Misspells Your Name:

Typographical error form filled on USCIS website 1/4/2021
Contacted USCIS if there has been any progress since THEIR error (Received a Tier 1 tracking number) 2/6/2021
Contacted USCIS again as the issue remains to be resolved (Received ANOTHER Tier 1 tracking number) 3/12/2021
Apparently USCIS chat is worthless; CALLED USCIS, Tier 1 agent promised that a Tier 2 agent would call me 4/28/2021
Received a call from a nice Tier 2 officer who said I may or may not get a correct extension letter, but just in case I would be scheduled an InfoPASS appointment 5/4/2021
Went to local USCIS service center and had to deal with a nasty and entitled customer service agent who refused to give me an I-551 stamp. National Benefits Center is supposed to mail me another I-797 within 7-10 days... So I had to waste my day, taking buses for two hours one-way just to deal with this lady's attitude? 5/7/2021

After anxiously monitoring our mailbox for a few days I DID receive a corrected I-797, w00t! All documents good to go Vaccinated Ready to visit my parents in Europe for the first time in 17 months!!  5/13/2021

The lesson: Don't use the chat for anything complicated, AND keep hassling USCIS for a response...

Hello All, three  weeks ago I posted on here about my experienced  when returning to USA with an expired green card. I carefully explained how I was treated and some of you posted and say it's normal. Today I just saw a post ( video) with someone Returning to US with a extension and just like me they took her to the secondary inspection room. They asked for her phone. Check on messages and dicovered that she was talking to someone that  wasn't  her husband. So they cancel her green card and gave her a parol to temporarily enter US and explain to USCIS why she should keep her GreenCard. Fam, this things are not normal. It's New , They just started sending people with extension letter  to secondary inspection room and can do what they want. Please becareful... Having extension letter is not 100% similar to having a grencard. Having a greencard is not same like a citizen. If your trip is not that important I will advise you to wait to have your greencard or citizenship before leaving the U.S. watch the link:
