To me, one of the most reasonable laws they could pass is if anyone is arrested with, and convicted for having, an illegal gun, they get a mandatory 5 years in prison regardless of what political identity category they fit.  No prosecutorial discretion, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Not bad,, but "illegal gun" is a very broad term.  I'd prefer to see some distinct definitions.

Also, they are pushing for universal background checks.  Background checks have been done for decades. Not sure what "universal" will change.  It will be nearly impossible to force private sellers to pay for a background check.

Since the elected in DC have no say in enforcement, it is all political theatre.  Btw, are they actually going to define what an “assault weapon” is?  I mean someone can assault someone else with say a hammer, a vehicle, some acid, the list goes on and on.

The weapons they are trying to ban are NOT assault weapons by the technical definition.  They are just too dumb to know better.

But as you said, ANYTHING you use against another is used to assault them.  Whether it be a gun, knife, spork, fist, or fire extinguisher.

Perhaps we should pass legislation banning sober drivers from driving cars.  Yanno, to cut down on drunk drivers killing people.

And add to that 10 years for committing a crime while using any weapon if found guilty. And no concurrent sentencing. No time off for good behavior.
