SSN Troubles After Green Card Issued (merged threads)

My husband originally came to the US on K-1 visa. We tried to obtain a SSN before we were married but ran into problems. The SSA could never really explain what the problem was other than Homeland Security found an error on our application. Eventually, we ran out of time and were told to reapply once we received his green card. It sounds like this is pretty common during the K-1 process and I wrote about it in another post.

So now he has received his green card and we went to the SSA office to reapply for a SSN. First they said we had two pending applications (one from when we tried during the K-1 visa period and another was opened on his behalf I believe since we checked that he wanted a SSN on the I-485 application). However, they could not process the SSN application because of a "mismatch in immigration status"' that was being investigated by Dept of Homeland Security. The SSA officer said there was nothing they could do since it was on the Dept of Homeland Security side but they did cancel the other 2 pending SSN applications. The SSA officer gave us a phone number to call Dept of Homeland Security but that number was a dead end. I reached out to USCIS and they said we would probably need to schedule an appointment with the local field office (they couldn't go into more detail since my husband wasn't around when I called them and they could only speak to the issue with him).

We'll reach back out to USCIS tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to proceed? Has anyone had a similar experience and how did you solve it?

Oh this sounds like a major headache.🤦‍♀️ I'm so sorry you are dealing with paperwork errors like this. From the sounds of the roadblocks you are hitting though my only suggestion might be that If SSA cancelled "the other 2 pending SSN applications' maybe your husband could start from scratch again and begin the process of applying for a new SSN seeing he has his Green Card in hand. Make an appointment with local SS office, take the GC and all your documentation and start again. Maybe the "mismatch in immigration status" will be removed once the 2 pending applications have been cancelled. Good Luck👍 !!!

Thanks for responding. Yep, we went into our local SSA office when he had his green card and the SSA officer started a third application but it can't be processed until the "mismatched'' is fixed.

I haven't talked to USCIS again, yet, but will try tomorrow.

I was hoping someone had also experienced this and could provide some pointers but it's been quite here on VJ.

Its a black box and I can't even understand what exactly the issue is, yet alone, know how to proceed.

I'm sure I do remember reading on here some people with a similar problems. Maybe go to search and type in something like "Mixmatch SSN". See if anyone has encountered the same/similar issue. On a side note- have you checked SAVE CaseCheck to see what or if it shows up in there as being registered in the system?

Thanks, I have tried the first but not the latter. I will give it a try!

My spouse is having issues getting a SSN. We tried to get a SSN during the k-1 visa period but there was an issue and we were told to wait until he had a green card.

So now he has his green card and we went into the SSA office and they told us that he had a "mismatch immigration status." The SSA officer told us we had to call Dept of Homeland Security to fix it and there was nothing more they could do. The officer also canceled his two other outstanding SSN applications (K-1 visa, and i-485 application where he checked he wanted a SSN).

It has been one month since we went to the SSA office and we have gotten no where. We have called USCIS several time and we are currently waiting to hear back from a 3rd tier officer. We have called SSA a couple of more times and they keep saying there is nothing they can do (they did say they were looking at the SAVE system). We have left a message with a SSA supervisor with no return call. We also emailed and called the SAVE and couldn't reach anyone by phone and received a form email response that was not helpful.

We are not sure what to do from here. We just keep getting the run around. I'm reading up here on VJ trying to see what others have done but I'm still confused. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, I thought about that but wanted to make sure I've done everything I can before reaching out. However,  I'm tired of spinning my wheels so maybe it's time.

Is this a SSA or USCIS issue? I'm not even sure where to focus. I have also see some posts about switching SSA offices, not sure if this would help.

My suggestion to you is the same as powerpuff's, enlist the help of your Member of Congress or one of the Senators from your state.
