Just curious, I did not see in the report that this officer was out of range.  Did you see this somewhere else?

I read somewhere that the officer was 148 feet away and that police training extends to 100 feet.  A great many sites to research, but maybe I'll find the information again.

One report had the truck at 1/2 a mile from the school.  Looking at the overhead diagram, it appears to be less.  But the max effective range of a 5.56 is about 300m, depending on the shooter.

If it WAS 148 feet, then it would have been a very easy shot.  Minus the adrenaline rush, of course.  Things change greatly when one is rushing a shot.

I was thinking the same thing.  The report doesn’t delve into this very much, but based on the overhead, I don’t this it was greater than 300m.regardless you are right, other factors are involved, but I expect this officer is kicking himself for not pulling the trigger.

I remember being out hunting Elk, and saw a big male walking across an opening a long way away.

 

By the time I thought about it he had gone.

 

I did pace it out and it was around 400yds, I had not thought of shooting that far, did not know the drop, looked it up later and I think it was 4ft.

 

And this was a .308. with a little bullet windage all sorts of things and you need to hit somewhere critical.

Yep.  When I mentioned "max effective range" of the 5.56 (not  7.62 as you were shooting), that is in perfect conditions, motionless target, no wind, and plenty of time to breathe.  Most likely, you'd have missed.  

 

I did make a once-in-a-lifetime shot back when I was a kid.  .22 single-shot rifle, out squirrel hunting.  Heard some quacks, looked up, and saw two ducks flying overhead.  Shot at the lead duck, nothing.  Reloaded, shot again, nothing.  Reloaded, first duck was already past my zenith, so I lead duck #2 even more...  

BAM!!  Down it plummeted.  The trajectory took it a fair dinkum past where I stood, and though I went where I thought it landed, and cast about for almost an hour, I never did find that duck.  For all I know, he ended up high in a tree.  Luckiest (and most un-rewarding) shot I ever made in my lifetime.
