Extension letter for state DL?

Hello,

Looking for feedback for those who used their extension letter to renew state driver’s license. I’ve noted posts about travel with extension letters but couldn’t see mention of acceptance by DMV etc. I realize this may vary state to state.

What State are you in?

Wyoming (our lawyer & USCIS office are located in Denver area). I did ask our lawyer about the DL thing and he couldn’t say what the DMV does on that, especially as we’re in another state etc.

Wisconsin DMV accepted mine with zero comment and zero hassle.

 

I made sure to specify that I was giving them my green card and the 24 month extension letter when I handed it over so they knew why I was giving them a sheet of paper in addition to the card they asked to see.

My husband used his extension letter to renew in January and had no issues (in Alabama). He took the letter, his green card, and proof of residence with him.

If the DMV doesn't accept the letter, they can request a SAVE CaseCheck to verify your status.  It won't be instantaneous, but it will definitely confirm the required information.

Oregon (Portland specifically) chiming in here. My husband was able to use his extension letter when he transfered his California DL to an Oregon DL when we moved states in March of this year. Zero hassle. The DMV guy had to make a bunch of photocopies but seemed completely unbothered and told us they see these all the time.

On the upside - I guess I was so convincing that they issued me a DL instead of a Learner's Permit that I actually applied for 🙃

I was able to renew my driver's license with the extension letter in Idaho, but of course they would only issue a license that expired at the same time the extension letter would expire, so I had to go back to renew again when I had received my green card.

Finding out is not that much of an issue at least. So far the replies are all positive. Here I had zero issues with my DMV in WI.

If you come by a DMV that the agent and their supervisor are unsure or unwilling, just say thank you and march over a different DMV. In that case, the issue is with the DMV employee, for you meet the criteria, and going to a different DMV you'll get to talk to a different employee that might just do their job.

CA DMV even lists the extension letter form (can't recall the name now) as one of the acceptable documents.

The agent still wasn't sure how to proceed but the supervisor was more knowledgeable and helped right away.

Yes, I figure that will be the case here too.
