Myself and my husband live with his mother. She pays all the bills and owns the house. We have nothing that is in our name. Also, I was told that I could not be added to his bank account without a social security number. Has anyone found themselves in a similar situation? If so, how did you find something with both of your names on it?

You can ask relatives or friends that have known you for a long time to write letters stating that they know you as a couple and your relationship is valid, that might help if you lack other more substantial evidence. Also you can use letters that come to your adress and have your and your husband's both names on the envelopes as evidence that you live together. Hope that helps :)

I did read the guides etc and I have tried to get a bank account, but as I said, they would not allow me to because I have no social security number.

I will try getting friends and family to write letters, thank you for that suggestion :)

We had a somewhat similar situation. You can have your MIL write a sworn affidavit saying that you guys live with her and she pays all the utilities etc.

We didn't have a problem with the bank account since my husband had a SSN. Talk to the bank, or talk to another bank. Worst case you can get an ITIN from the IRS and the bank should take that. But why can't you get your SSN?

We didn't own any cars or homes either, but we had plenty of other evidence showing our joint financial lives. For example we were on the same health insurance policy, I named my husband as my beneficiary on my IRA and 401k accounts and life insurance, etc.

Cholet, please fill out your timeline or at least indicate what status you are at. :) This will help immeasurably in us answering your questions.

RE: Bank: All banks have different policies regarding whether or not you can apply without an SSN. I can guarantee that Washington Mutual does not require an SSN; you would need to supply your passport and/or other photo ID and your marriage certificate. I was able to open mine with a passport and my husband. If you have a joint chequing account, it's free and throw in $100. Voila! Instant financial mingling. :)

Things establishing a relationship:

(1) Cards addressed to both of you (with envelope to both)

(2) Photographs with the two of you together.

(3) Photographs with the two of you together with family and/or friends.

(4) Official mail addressed to you at the address.

(5) Official mail addressed to him at the address.

(6) Documents declaring him as your emergency contact and vice versa.

(7) Joint memberships, formal (IE: gym, AAA, Costco/Sam's Club)

(8) Joint memberships, informal (IE: Netflix, Blockbuster; the library; movie clubs, gaming clubs; clothing stores)

(9) Notarized (or not) letters from friends.

(10) Letters/mail/postcards from family and friends to you.

(11) Junk mail (or subscriptions)

(12) Joint insurance (health/medical, disability, life, renter's)

(13) Joint tax filing (esp. if married filing jointly)

(14) Travel documents together (IE: plane/train tickets, itineraries, hotel receipts, souvenirs)

(15) Veterinary documents (IE: vet bills, adoption papers, kitten birth certificates, with both names listed for the animal)

Other things you can do:

1) See if your recreation center/park district allows "family" sign ups. That is, you and your husband can register as a family. You don't even need to take a class but it helps.

2) Sign up for Netflix, even for a month or two. Voila -- official mail sent to you and your husband in your names! :) And you can cancel it pretty easily.

3) Get your husband to add you as a secondary driver on his insurance policy. It shouldn't be too difficult or all that expensive.

4) Apply for renter's insurance even if it's basic. Your mother-in-law may pay all the bills, but even the most minimal renter's insurance at least could have the two of you listed as a couple and it's not that expensive for a base policy.

5) Do you have cell phones? That could be a joint bill right there.

You should be able to get a SSN with your EAD.
