Hello VJ,

Man does time fly, it seems like just yesterday I was going through the K1 process. Well, fast fwd 11 yrs.. I am coming to the VJ community for help once again. Looking to start the citizenship process and am looking to be pointed in the right direction. As a green card holder do I need to file for an adjustment of status? Or a brand new N400? So many questions, looking for some guidance.

Little info about myself, current green card holder, originally from a K1 visa. still married, 11 yrs later, not wanting to renew my green card again.

Thanks in advance

Adjustment of status is the process of getting a green card...... You can start by reading this guide:

"The US immigration process requires a great deal of knowledge, planning, time, patience, and a significant amount of money.  It is quite a journey!"

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

One thing that I didn't see in there is how to handle people moving? I have lived in Illinois for the past 8 yrs. WE are moving to Indiana at the end of the month. Do I need to wait to apply or is it easy to list current address and change it later?

It is easy to file to change your address but there have been one too many cases of USCIS not updating people's records.

I would recommend you wait and file after you move

You are required to reside in a state in a USCIS service district for at least 3 months before submitting your application.

So if it is going to be the same service district, you should be able to file right after the move else you will have to wait 3 months.

You can use this tool to determine your eligibility.  If you move to a different USCIS district, you have to wait 3 months before you can apply.  Not really sure if you move will change your USCIS field office, the third link lets you search by zip code.

Good Luck!

That depends.  The OP needs to verify the USCIS field office for the new address first.  If for instance he was moving from the Chicago area to the South Bend or Gary area, the Chicago field office still handles that area.
