Hi everybody,

Here is the landscape:

I'm a single father, living with my 3month old daughter.

Currently claiming unemployment benefit because I can't work on-site with an infant on hand, been unemployed since mid February 2022 .

I do earn well above the poverty rate and we are a household of 2 (My daughter and I). I can get back to work once my mother comes over.

would selecting 'Unemployed' (Form i-864, Part 6) negatively effect my mother's case at NVC or should I wait to get a job first and then proceed?

Thanks

Yes, I do earn at that level. Me and my daughter are the only people in the household.

In your previous posts you mentioned sponsoring your parents and your wife.

What happened to your father and your wife's petitions?

Being unemployed and sponsoring 3 family members might lead to the CO requesting you obtain a joint sponsor.

Obtaining a job now (if your mother's case is currently and NVC) might lead to a refusal at the interview as some COs want to see a long work history. 3-4 months of employment might not be sufficient.

If you are no longer petitioning your wife and father you might be okay. But, if their petitions are still on file you should be acting as if you have a current household of 5.

(This is my conservative approach to your situation).

Childcare should only run you around $100-$150/week depending on your area. If you have the potential to earn over $50,000/year it would be worth going back to work and paying childcare rather than living off your savings for 2-3 years waiting for your mother to come. I believe the cut-off for unemployment is 26 weeks so you only have about 3 months of benefits left.

Infant spots are not necessarily easy to find and are often the $150/week or higher for formal daycare.

Many college students are looking for summer work.  I'd probably take advantage of their availability, get working and find a more permanent child care solution, be it a daycare slot, in home daycare or nanny once a salary is being earned and the amount available for that expense is determined.  It is so important to be working when attempting to sponsor a potential immigrant.
