I'm having a hard time believing the results. I voted for Leni.

Marcos is far more China-friendly than Leni is. Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/06/philippines-election-china-friendly-marcos-retains-a-wide-lead.html

I am hearing about too many reports of broken vote count machines and anomalies (example: the number of votes came in way too fast, even before the provincial servers had begun transmitting their data to the national servers, etc).

I am already reading about calls for street protests from people who I never thought would be this emotionally invested in an election.

The online disinformation machine is the scariest part of this all: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/may/09/ferdinand-marcos-jr-triumph-philippines-presidential-election

Whatever my opinion is, the outcome doesn't surprise me a bit.  I make it a point to stay out of Philippine politics but I can say my wife, her whole family and about everyone they know were very strongly for Bongbong, and mostly even have nothing but nice things to say about his dad back in "the good ol' days".  Go figure.  I can't rationalize it but I know first hand that BBM does indeed have allot of heartfelt supporters.

Exactly the same with my wife and her family.

my girl says that marcos wants to restore relations with USA and she voted based on that and few other things.......sh said leni too china friendly and she likes pacquiao but thinks he too inexperienced?

OMG! That is the other way around. That's very unfortunate!

I can't imagine any reason Filipino's would ever vote Bongbong in as president. I just can't believe it.

You and me both! Unless there is any cheating happened. Those who voted were whitewashed.

Yes, they were whitewashed. They owe the Ph and the US government unpaid taxes. I would not fault the son of the sins of the father but he never acknowledged that his dad did anything wrong. What they say the good ol days is probably just for the people in their region.

Yes, really exasperating and disappointing.  Having observed Philippine politics and the political ideas of average people (admittedly, on an anecdotal basis, not on the basis of scientific research) for many years now, it just seems that Philippine voters possess a sort of "prison yard" mentality, where the candidates who exhibit the greatest propensity toward use of force, no matter how brutal, to solve problems are granted the right to rule the country and rule it however they see fit.

I even had one female friend on Facebook express the belief that women are "too weak to be president".  She backed up her point by saying that "women aren't fighters, so if our country gets in a war, a woman president wouldn't be able to help us win because she would be weak and break down". Such a sad attitude.  Sad that she's bought into the "might makes right" brainwashing and sad that she holds such a low opinion of her own gender.

And now, those of us still trying to get our partners out of that country will face another six years of trying to cut a path through the corruption, red tape, lockdowns / martial law, enforced systematic poverty, etc, etc simply to be with the ones we love.

Please check out my music video for "Bright Side of the World", the song I wrote for my fiancee. You can watch the video on YouTube here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKu3SvqCBfg

Thanks for listening! :)

It is essentially a vote against the liberal party and the constitution which has been in place for 30 years which has not helped the average Filipino.

is Marcos the answer? Probably not....

but I definitely understand why the people didn’t vote for Leni and all that she is associated with.

the country has a lot of issues, and I think Duterte realized how deep it is entrenched. Changing things is not easy

Here is what I have noticed with my fiance's family, coworkers and friends (not saying this applies to all Filipinos). It seems a lot of them vote for the person who is from their area/province, regardless of the policies of that person. I actually went on the websites of Marcos and Leni so I could educate myself on them and noticed there is little to no information about their positions on the issues.

Which that is why you saw Sara campaigning really hard for Marcos in the Visaya and Mindanao regions. That is because her job for VP was pretty much locked in so instead of campaigning for herself she campaigned for Marcos in the last several weeks.

Yeah, issues seem to be irrelevant in politics there. I guess even history fades memories. I live in Hawaii and remember the overthrow of the father and them arriving with trunks of cash that was confiscated upon arrival. I think the biggest mistake that the Philippines made was allowing BBM and his mother back to the Philippines after Ferdinand died. They should have demanded that they forfeit all the money that they took before letting them return.
