Passports for stepchildren (beneficiaries) - at what stage are they needed?

I will soon be submitting three I-130s for my husband and my two stepdaughters. His passport expires in about a month and should be easy to renew. However, the two girls (age 12 and 15) do not have passports, so we are going through the process of getting theirs.

 

Can I submit the I-130s with his expiring passport and without theirs, as long as we'll have them by the NVC/pre-interview stage? Once we have them, can we add them as "addendums" to our application? I just don't want to hold up the process while we wait to receive their passports.

4/13/23 - Submitted DS-261 & Civil Documents

4/26/23 - Documentarily Qualified (CR1, CR2 x 2)

5/26/23 - Documentarily Qualified  (CR2)

7/13/23 - Interviews Scheduled (CR1, CR2 x 2); Expedite sent to NVC for 4th applicant

7/20/23 - Interview Scheduled (CR2)

 

Consulate

9/15/23 & 9/18/23 - Interviews at CDJ (Mexico)

9/18/23 - Approved! (CR1, CR2); Administrative Processing (CR2 x 2)

9/23/23 - Entry into U.S.! (CR1, by land at Hidalgo International Bridge)

10/5/23 - Administrative Processing appointment at CDJ (CR2 x 2)

11/13/23 - CR2 approved!

11/15/23 - CR2 approved!

11/22/23 - Entry into U.S.! (CR, by land at Hidalgo International Bridge)

1.  You can submit the I-130s.  They will need valid passports for the interview.

2.  There are no addendums for immediate relatives of US citizens.  Each will require a separate I-130, and each will be a separate case.  

 

You have many months to wait before the interview.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

1. Phew! We’ll definitely have them by interview time.

 

2. Right, I know that - I’ve prepared 3 separate I-130s for each of them. I worded my question incorrectly. What I meant was, I’ve heard of petitioners sending additional documents after the I-130 is submitted - for example, a copy of the petitioner’s updated passport after a name change. My question was if we’ll need to send those afterwards, or if we’ll just wait for the NVC stage and present them when needed at/before the interview.

 

And I know, there’s so much wait time in front of us 😫 I’m encouraged by everyone here who has made it to the other side of this process - I can’t wait until we’re there!

You don't even need to send the copy of your spouses's passport for i130 unless you are sending its pages marked with stamps for some travel evidences. It'll be required during DS-260 processing at NVC and the subsequent interview. Just provide info or bring it at the time, no amendments or addendum needed.

2015-08-17: I-130 approved

2015-09-23: NVC received file

2015-10-05: NVC assigned Case number, Invoice ID & Beneficiary ID

2016-06-30: DS-261 completed, AOS Fee Paid, WL received

2016-07-05: Received IV invoice, IV Fee Paid

2016-07-06: DS-260 Submitted

2016-07-07: AOS and IV Package mailed

2016-07-08: NVC Scan

2016-08-08: Case Complete

2017-06-30: Interview, approved
