Traveling to Mexico with expired GC and extension letter while I-751 pending

I got denied boarding by Delta to Mexico today with my expired green card and i-797 extension. It was super frustrating because I have been planning this vacation for months assuming that I can travel with the extension.

Anyway, has anyone been able to go the next day with a different airline? I just requested appointments to get Mexican tourist visa at their consulate and I-551 stamp from USCIS. However, I have no idea how long that would take. I read some post online about getting Japan tourist visa but I checked and it takes 5 days...

@mycase17 what nationality is the passport?

So we want to go to Mexico and my husband's passport is allowed as visa-free entry, he has an expired GC and extension letter. Will he be able to enter the flight and Mexico?

Their website could be more specific...

If passport allows visa free entry, his GC and extension letter are not relevant for Mexico, only for boarding flight back to the US and going through immigration in the US
