international to domestic flight, you will almost always have to pick up your bag and check it in again especially if domestic airline is different

i  don't

 

flew  qatar from morocco to Doha to Chicago and then  United airlines to Nashville

luggage checked all the way

 

only time i ever had to pick up luggage and recheck it was when i flew in to Miami from Peru

Another reason for the 4-hour recommendation is that the inbound international flight might be delayed, for numerous reasons.

I allowed for two hours at LAX and I absolutely regret it.  

 

We got to our connecting flight in time, but it was extremely stressful for everyone. 

 

Best to allow 4 hours, IMO.

I think 4 hours layover is a good choice. My POE was Chicago (back in 2020 during COVID time). My waiting time for the Immigration (inside the room) was a bit over 1.5 hours. My layover time was 3.5 hrs. Some other VJ members mentioned about the taxing time, taking train/bus to another terminal, etc. are all valid and important facts to consider. Better allow extra time so you may even be able to get a bite during the layover.
