Hello,

Does anyone have an experience with medical in Canada for US immigration for children? Hepatitis A and B vaccines are on the checklist but is not given to children in at least Ontario. If you have gone through medical, did the doctor waive this requirement? How did you address this? Thank you in advance.

I don't think Hep A was needed for kids when we went through it and I didn't realize my youngest would need Hep B as like you said they don't give it to the kids until around 7th grade or 12 years old. So I had to pay for it at the local Health Unit. Doctors don't tend to keep that one in stock as it's given at school. You have to have the series started before the doctor's will complete the medical. No waiver for it and they won't send the medical until it is started.  I had to fax fax in proof of it to the Doctor and once that was done he completed the medical.

Just make sure you stay on top of the timeline for each step for Hep B as they need to be given on time.

Some clinics will do shots but they still charge you for it, and it tends to be more then if you get it through the Health Unit.  Either way because you will need it off schedule per Canada's guideline you have to pay.

My kids had TwinRix when they were little.  When we got down here to the US, the HepA in TwinRix wasn't recognized (pediatrician said they were too young when they got it) so HepA that had to be "renewed".  One kid got a second dose this week.  In hindsight, I probably should have gotten a titers test for each kid.

You may also want to check your local school requirements for where you're moving stateside.  My kid needed another chicken pox vaccine before they'd let us register for school.  If there's anything missing, hopefully you can get it covered under provincial health care or a Canadian employer's health plan and save the out of pocket cost.
