"Missing Taxes" Embassy sent message day prior to interview.

I attempted to file my taxes on April 18th (yeah waited last day..... idiot).

But I couldn't complete the Efile because my wife (Ukrainian who I'm petitioning for) and daughter don't have a SSN.

What I was advised to do is file for an extension by removing her. Which slightly  increased my total due. And then pay what you think you owe.

Then once you make a SSN for them adjust it. And since I already paid what I would have owed if they were on there I wouldn't owe anything else.

Problem is I don't have a transcript. And this is what they want to see. I have a 1099 that shows my income which I sent to them. I also sent them the 1040 that was used to estimate how much I owe, proof from IRS that I paid that amount (almost $8000), The extension form as well as a couple of screenshots from the IRS site and the email that states that my extension was approved.

Is there anything more I can do? This totally hit me out of nowhere. Our interview is tomorrow.

I'm panicking :(

At this point with IRS still backed up from covid and 2020 taxes,  it will take longer to get any filing done

but file as MFJ  to claim her as u state u need that

and apply with W7 for ITIN  by paper filing with documents needed on the IRS non resident alien spouse

just get this all forms 1040 W7 and any other u need filled out and sent to her or embassy whoever wanted them

case #,  both names and both DOB's

when u actually submit them now to IRS is not an immigration issue

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/nonresident-spouse

use your copy of the 1040 with copies of any W2's,  1099, or 1099R (and the estimate proof of payment)   for immigration as u will not have the IRS transcripts (any time soon no matter what u do)

IRS is not backed up. We filed this February and in 2 weeks in March already got tax refund and I have all my transcripts on hand. Just don’t wait till the last second to file, its not like you don’t know the dedline.

I have 1099's from where I got paid.

I have 1040 that was essentially used to estimate what I owe.

if spouse is on 1040 and u have completed the W7 ,  send it

with copies of everything

1040

1099(s)

W7

marriage certificate

proof of ID (photo ID)

or take from the list of needed documents from the IRS site i sent

this is not hard just a lot of paperwork

BTW  not a bad idea to get a POA from your wife to show u can sign in her name

Yes, and the problem here was the OP got tax advice from a source that did not consider the immigration ramifications.  The correct advice for this situation can still be followed.  File the return with a status other than Married filing jointly, and file an amended return when the family is here.  What he's already done MIGHT be enough, but if the return is filed, then he will have a complete copy of the return with all schedules 1099s etc. to email to his wife to print and take with her.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Just to add, your wife won't get denied at the interview. If they're not satisfied with what she brings she'll get a letter with what is needed, you'll send it to the consulate as soon as you have it and she'll get her visa after that. It might take a bit longer but it's not a complete catastrophe.
