Confused About The I-864 & I-864a With Joint Sponsors

Hi all,

I was told a while ago that if my joint sponsors were my parents and they filed their taxes jointly, that only one of them had to fill out an I-864, along with an I-864a and include his spouse's income and assets. I realize that I need to file an I-864 anyway, even though my current situation does not allow me to have an income - I am in the process of doing that; hence my confusion. The form says both parents need to file an I-864a - is that true? As I said, they are filing jointly. So, only 1 parent has filled out both forms and included both their incomes and assets.

Assuming only 1 of my parents needed to fill out the forms, I have this following question, as well:

On my I-864 in part 5 #7, it says: " OPTIONAL: If you have siblings, parents, or adult
children with the same principal residence who are
combining their income with yours by submitting Form
I-864A, enter the number here." - Do I put "1" or "2"? I put 2 because I listed each of their individual income based on the I-864 & I-864a one of them filled out.

Thank you for your help!

You provide I-864

Your parents are not combining income with you.  One of them will be your joint sponsor (the one with the most income is customary) and the other will provide an I-864a.  Assets are optional.  If income is clearly sufficient, leave the asset section blank.

You do it this way, even if one parent clearly has enough income.  It's because it is a "contract" in addition to a statement of income.
