E2 Status, applying for SSN

I arrived in the US from Canada on a B2 visa.

While in the US I purchased a business and applied for an E2 and was approved for E2 status change with an immigration lawyer about 4 weeks ago.  I have not left the US yet.

Last week I applied for a SSN,  the employee referred to my I 94 that said I had entered on a B2 and would need my I 94 to say E2 to get a SSN.

Can I get a SSN with E2 status change?  Do I have to leave the country and re enter with a E2 visa to get a SSN?

Also I would like to import my vehicle.  Can I import a vehicle with an E2 status change or do I need to leave the country to get the E2 visa before I can import my vehicle?

I thought you got an I 94 with a CoS

CoS is change of status.

I have a USCIS (form/letter/797) that says Cos to E2.  I took it w me to get a SSN but when the employee looked up my last i94 he said I arrived on a B2 and need my passport updated.  I went to the airport to  customs office to inquire and they said the only way to change your i94 in your passport is to leave and re enter.

I 797 sounds like your receipt for your application. You said you had been approved, so do you not have that?

If you want an SSN, looks like you have to leave and re-enter, to request CBP to admit you as E2.  Based on the SSA manual, the only acceptable proof of eligibility for SSN for E2 non-immigrant is an I-94 record showing E2 class of admission.  The I-797 notice from USCIS is not acceptable.  Reference here -- https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.Nsf/lnx/0110211420#g

Yes,  I had the receipt w me and showed them but they said they go by the I-94

What about the approval?
