Okay. I submitted my wife’s AOS package last June. We’re adjusting from k1. Long story short, it appeared  our interview was waived as our original interview was scheduled, canceled, and then we received an RFE asking for evidence of our marriage and all the information we would have taken to the interview. A month after replying to the RFE, the case status was changed to “actively reviewed” on the 14th of April. Today, the 25th, our combo card EAD changed to “card is being produced.” After the first update since June? Does this make any sense haha.

my question is, is this normal? Should we be worried that after our RFE was received they approved the combo card and not the green card? Is this a systems thing for them? Do they have to approve the combo card before the green card? Sorry, just stressing hahah.

Are you sure its the EAD being produced?

I wouldn't be worried..USCIS sends some questionable automated messages sometimes

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

It makes perfect sense.  An RFIE for an I-485 will temporarily halt the processing for the EAD.  It sounds like your EAD processing resumed and was approved after they accepted your RFE documents since you said your EAD receipt number status changed to "card is being produced".

No, EADs are not always approved before the Green Card.

Let us know which card arrives.  Good luck.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

So, if our interview was waived, why would they approve the EAD card and not just the green card? It’s kind of useless to have both of them now.. especially when it seems our green card is about to get approved 😅

Especially because it was the i485 that got the RFE and not the combo card section.

The Green Card and EAD are processed at different locations.  Once the RFE documents were accepted, the EAD process resumed.  However, the I-485 approval may or may not have been finished.  Why would the EAD receipt number status show as "card is being produced" for the Green Card?  It wouldn't.

What is the status when you check using the I-485 receipt number?

Because they’re two different processes at completely different locations. EADs are processed by National Benefits Center. An IO was going over your file and saw that you were not issued a GC yet so he approved the EAD because that’s the procedure. “Almost approved” is still not approved. I don’t see what is odd about this, it is completely normal and makes sense.

EAD applications rarely get RFEs like I-485 does.

Waiving a Green Card interview does not mean approval, although it might.  The EAD is a completely different process at a different location.

Than, I assume the Green Card has not been approved yet.  Hopefully, it will be soon.
