You are luckier than most, she can visit. Most couples do not have the priveledge of living across the border with the ability to visit each other at all. Separation is part of the immigration process and if there were an "easy" way to get an expedite, everyone would take advantage of it. Just be thankful that you have the ability to visit each other, most do not.

A year will get you to the NVC stage and uploading documents. Then 3 more months minimum to get DQ at NVC, then another 2 months at least to get an interview( probably longer at Montreal). If she has the visa in 16-18 months, that would be really quick. Visits should be fine as others have said, keep them short to be safe.
