Not much, but build a network of 100,000 cameras and suddenly you have a total surveillance society.

Have a go at the car bombers, train bombers, robbers etc that give cause to necesitate such measures. At least in the UK because there are cameras we can catch criminals like this.

I would much rather live in a place where someone has to watch me pull my knickers from up my #######......than live in a place that criminals walk free!!!

I dont remember there being cameras everywhere when the IRA where blowing up cars left and right back in the 70's.

If I am part of the problem....so be it.

What solution can you come up with thats any better???

300,000 informants (approximately one in fifty of the population), who monitored even

Don't think for a moment that the Stasi wouldn't have used CCTV cameras everywhere

had the technology been available at the time.

What solution can you come up with thats any better???

Strong privacy laws to prevent the police from maintaining extensive files on citizens

With the technology around today and lawyers that defend everything I am not sure that good old fashioned police work and intelligence will cut it. Which is why the surveillence cameras are used as often as they are.

I really don't see the problem with the cops having the cameras...as I said before...as opposed to them being everywhere just spying for no reason.

On a cop, it serves a dual purpose as it monitors the police officer as well. think of how easily cops can (and some do) abuse their authority. If making an arrest and turning on the cam, then there's an independent, non-biased acct of what happened....which is always good instead of the ole 'he said she said' #######.

The cams just everywhere in the UK? Those are an invasion of privacy.

On the basis that it appears every police car here in the states has a video recorder on its dashboard seems only evolutionary that they put them on police helmets and I have no problem with that whatsoever either here or in the UK. UK town centres are crawling with CCTV from a crime element and have caused many a criminal to regret his action (and probably a few to not bother) And despite what was said early as someone who remembers the start of the troubles no they were not around pre-IRA bombing. Perhaps for those old enough to remember the best instance of CCTV catching criminals is in the case of toddler James Bulger when no-one would have dreamt off looking for two young boys as his abductors but for public and private CCTV footage. Give me CCTV cameras in public places over the Patriot ACt (which is a true invasion of privacy IMHO) any day of the week.

In the UK both situations are true; they watch you pull the knickers from up your ####### AND there are criminals walking free; they're not even putting them in prison anymore because all the prisons are full.
