Worried - No word on SSN.

I entered the US on May 23rd and I still haven't heard anything. No welcome letter or SSN.

I've had to come back to the UK on business and I'm worried that they won't let me in if I haven't been processed correctly at my POE.

Is there anyone I can call about the Welcome Letter or SSN? Surely there must be some way of checking that my paperwork is being processed without going to a Social Security office.

I'd appreciate some advice on this.

30-10-2002 - Met Katie in NYC.

01-02-2003 - I return to Scotland.

2002 /2004 - Back and forth UK/USA (many times!)

30-10-2004 - Proposed to Katie. YES!!!

03-02-2005 - Married in Glasgow.

01-03-2005 - Katie returns to US to file UK visa application.

29-03-2005 - UK visa issued!!

06-04-2005 - Katie comes home to Scotland.

11-04-2005 - Filed I-130 DCF London Embassy

14-04-2005 - DCF rejected. Must file through a US SC.

02-06-2005 - Filed I-130 TSC

13-06-2005 - Receipt notice from CSC

28-12-2005 - Received email notification, I-130 approved 21-12-05!!

09-01-2006 - Case received by NVC, case number assigned.

15-11-2006 - NVC complete case and forward to Embassy in London.

19-01-2007 - Interview scheduled for Feb 28th.

06-02-2007 - Medical in London

28-02-2007 - Visa Interview - APPROVED!!!

02-03-2007 - Visa in hand.

23-05-2007 - Enter USA through Newark (EWR)

same happened to me when i came in on a cr-1!! I just went to my local SSN office with my passport and applied for it again!! week later SSN arrived in the mail, was to easy

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

You will be able to reenter on the visa in your passport. You would be as well to go to the SS office when you get back to the states.

18 Jul 04 - Police Certificate Requested

19 Jul 04 - I-130 sent

22 Jul 04 - NOA I-130 logged with INS

29 Jul 04 - DS230 sent

29 Jul 04 - Had vaccinations

14 Aug 04 - Police Certificate Received

30 Sept 04 - I-130 approved

30 Nov 04 - Received I-864 from co sponsor

04 Dec 04 - Sent DS2001

13 Jan 05 - Interview date 04 Feb 05

04 Feb 05 - VISA APPROVED!!!

08 Feb 05 - Proud owner of IR-1 Visa

09 Jun 05 - Arrived in the USA

24 April 09 - US Citizen

You could go the Social Security web site and get the help line number and call them to see if you are in their system. If not you will have to go to an office to apply for a SSN

On the welcome letter is your A # (but you have it on the visa too) and the case number you have it with USCIS for now one. I got my welcome letter in 18 days and the GC arrived shortly after.....no sign from SSN so I went to apply for one, it has been more than 2 weeks since I applied and it didn't arrive.... funny thing is that I got another 2 welcome letters in the mail :lol:

05/03/2007 I have an unofficial "PETITION APPROVED" ...waiting for confirmation from Consulate

05/07/2007 Received email from USCIS ROME confirming that our petition was approved (why Rome? because we complained to the District Office Rome about the Sub-Office Frankfurt..it took too long for our petition to be approved)...now waiting for the interview letter from the Consulate

05/18/2007 E-mail from IV Frankfurt, our interview was scheduled for May 29th

05/19/2007 Packet 4 in the mail: ja ja ja interview letter

05/29/2007 Interview at 7.30 a.m. APPROVED Thank you, God!

06/01/2007 Visa arrived !

When I went into the SS officer as I hadn't received my SSN I didn't take the welcome letter not sure I even had it at that time.

Just take you passport with the visa in it and proof of your address. If you look on the SS web site it tells you what you need, I not sure now as once you have done it it isn't something you need to remember. In fact all the guy looked at was my passport and visa.

edit: In fact now I've posted this and can see my timeline :wacko: I can see I did get my SSN before the welcome letter so must have got the letter about 2 weeks after I went in to see about the SSN. So there isn't anything on the letter that is needed.

Most seem to arrive about a month to six weeks after you entry the US. However when I came in the immigration officer said to me if I didn't receive it after 6 months to give them a call.

Might well be worth a quick phone call to check all is well especially as it is both the GC and SSN haven't arrived.

The same thing happened to us. We entered on June 3--a week after you and up until last week, we had nothing. We called the USCIS and they knew nothing. We tried to apply in person for the SSN but we weren't even in the system yet! So finally we made an infopass appointment to go in person to the USCIS office. They told us the papers were held up in the Texas Service Center. That was July 2nd. Then about July 15th we got a welcome letter, July 17th a SS card and then this past weekend the permanent resident card.
