Hi Everyone,
I have a question. so last year the entire 2021 I do not have any SSN, but I did work and pay taxes to my home country. I moved to the US later the year 2021 and was still paying taxes at home. Now I have aSSN issued last March 2022. Does anyone know if paying separately should be done since technically I'm not employed here?

Thanks in advance

You are employed here if you live and do your work and collect income in the US even if you work for a foreign company, and get the money paid into a foreign bank account.  Your timeline doesn’t indicate when you moved to the US. What was the date?

I don’t know what you mean by “paying separately”. Do you mean filing a tax return as Married Filing Separately? You can do that or file a joint return with your spouse as Married Filing Jointly.

You can use your SSN received in March on your 2021 return. It was received before the tax filing deadline.

I moved August 2021.
Thank you @Wuozopo, I saw a separate explanation you made on a different thread with a case similar as mine and it was enlightening. We initially entered last week filing jointly and was unsure since I am technically paying the same amount of money in taxes in my home country and here in the US.  We didn't submit yet since we weren't sure completely.

We're probably now filing jointly later today.

You can file for an extension today because you have a lot to do yet.

On a joint return you report your worldwide income. That’s spouse wages plus all your foreign. It shows up on Line 1 as earnings but you get tax breaks later, so don’t think you will be taxed on all that.

You can use Form 2555 to get the Foreign Earn Income Exclusion for money that you earned from Jan 1 to August ? (last day in your country). That deducts the US taxes for that part of your earnings. Use the Bonafide Resident test (of the Philippines) as your qualifier because you were a citizen there and qualified to work there.

You will be taxed by the IRS for any wages received by you from August ? (first day in US) to December 31. BUT because you also paid taxes to your country for the Aug to Dec wages, you can get a tax credit based on the amount you paid to you country during that time in the US. That’s form 1116 Foreign Tax Credt. It’s a complicated form. 😵💫

Also don’t forget to claim your part of the Economic Impact payment for 2021. ($1400). That’s line 30 of the form 1040.  You qualify by having your SSN before the filing deadline for 2021 taxes.

I would send the extension request, then you have extra time to work through all this and get a bigger refund.
