Hello Everyone!

I have a question regarding my SSN. I entered the US with IR-1 visa on March 24th. I was told to expect my GC in mail in couple of weeks. But what about my SSN? Will it come together with the GC or should I go to an office and order one? I already have one SSN from my previous stay here in the US with my maiden name, and when filling out the DS230 form, I checked the box I would like to receive an SSN..

If I need to go in person, which office do I go to??

Also, what other documents do I need to get after my arrival in the US?

Thanks for your time.

RM 00202.315 Enumeration At Entry

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202315

Answer "Yes" to Questions 33a. and 33b.on Form DS-230

You will then need to allow at least 3 weeks to see if the Enumeration

At Entry process works. If you don't receive your SSN card within 3

weeks it's time to head on down to your friendly neighborhood

SSA office.

Find office:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

If you have been assigned an SSN the office can provide you with the

number. However, it is has been over 14 days from the day the SSN was

assigned and you haven't received the card you will probably need to

apply for a replacement card.

Take proof of age, identity and work authorized alien status. Proof of

age is not needed for a replacement card.

Birth certificate and I-551 card or passport and MRIV with temporary I-551

language should be enough to take into the SSA office.

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203410

RM 00203.410 Evidence of Alien Status for an SSN Card for an Alien

Lawfully Admitted for Permanent Residence

B. KINDS OF EVIDENCE ESTABLISHING LAPR STATUS

-- I-551, Permanent Resident Card

-- Machine Readable Immigrant Visa with Temporary I-551 Language

Note: The MRIV shows the alien's identification number ("A" number) as

the "Registration Number" in the upper right-hand corner of the MRIV.

Usually the social security card comes in a few weeks after your entry into the states. If you do not get a new card within month I would go to your local ss office and see about them changing your card. Good luck.

normally if you check the box, you should get your ssn after a few weeks.

However, sometimes things go wrong and they might not have info on you at the SSA. If you don't hear anything 1 months after entry, contact your SSA to see if they have you in there or not.

my two cents:

-you already have SSN, so you should just go to SSA office with marriage certificate and have them make a name change.

Since you checked box "I would like to receive SSN", they may now generate a new one for you... and that's not what you need.

This is going to sound strange but is this true of Brooklyn (and Las Vegas)? For those of you living in these two cities you will know what I'm talking about but for the rest of you: Brooklyn, New York and Las Vegas, Nevada are the ONLY two cities in the USA where you must go IN PERSON to apply for a new SSN and/or apply for a new card. Trust me I went thru this to get my new card after the wedding.. So my question is because we are in Brooklyn will Crash and Crash Jr still get their SSN in the mail OR will we have to go down to the Processing Center (ugh)??
