Lost my wallet along with green card. I-751 filed a year ago and still processing. What to do?

Hey all,

I recently lost my wallet along with my driving license, green card, credit cards etc.

I filed for the I-751 a year ago in Texas (4/12/21). It has been transferred a lot of times and now says a new office has jurisdiction.

I held onto my expired green card along with the i-757 for some time and now i no longer have my green card. I need to go to the DPS soon to get a replacement driving license and I'm reading online that the I-757 should be sufficient. Is that true? Or do i still need my expired green card?

I looked online and it says that i can apply for a replacement green card, but why would i do that if it's already expired? Furthermore, it costs 500 to do so and i don't have that kind of money.

What should i do?

You'll have to replace it. I-90 is the way to go.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Legally, you're required to have that GC.  If you get pulled over and can't provide proof of legal status, you could be up the creek.  File the I-90 and once you get your I-797 NOA, maybe see if you can get an infopass appointment and get a passport stamp.

Regardless, DPS is pretty picky about it.  You'd best make an appointment now and see if they'll run a SAVE verification.  They may refuse until you file to replace the greencard and can provide that receipt notice.

Check your local DMV for that. This defers from state to state, per my experience.

I-90 can be filed online and you get receipt within 24 hours

I-90 is NOT the correct course of action and is waste of time and money… look on the very first page of the I-90 instructions and it’s right there:

“When a conditional permanent resident’s status is within 90 days of expiration, the conditional permanent resident is ineligible for a replacement conditional resident card”.

The I-797 receipt/extension is largely useless without the expired card. So, make an infopass for an I-551 stamp.
Don’t sweat it, the stamp simply replaces the expired card + I-797 combination, and will be sufficient by itself for travel, proof of status, drivers license renewal, and for SAVE verification.
This is your only option here.

Thank you so much! Some kind soul at the DPS was able to fit my into an appointment today after I explained my situation. My original appointment was 3 months away.

I went to the DPS and was able to get my replacement driving license done. They already had my green card in the system, so they didn't even asked for me to show it. The lady just printed it out. In addition to that, I showed my I-757 extension which was sufficient to prove my legal status. The lady had some trouble getting the system to accept my green card since it was expired and she couldn't use the I-757, but she made it work by inputting my passport. I'm so relieved!

I'll look into the I-551 stamp later today. Thank you!

I apologize, can you point me towards the right direction? How do I make an infopass for I-551 stamp? Everywhere I look it starts with applying for I-90?

My husband got his license replaced just last week with his I-797 (notice of action) that extended his green card. This was in Georgia and his license was expired. They did not ask him for his green card. It’s worth a try.  We’ve been waiting almost 2 years for his 10 year card. It’s such a pain to have to keep renewing his DL. Good luck.

I got mugged two months ago, they took the wallet with my GC in it. All I did was to call the USCIS field office to get an appointment, and when I was there, they stamped the 551 to my passport with the validity of 1 year. You can use it just like the regular GC. I flew to Mexico two weeks ago with that stamp, and didn't bring the extension letter. Nobody asked anything. I was even able to use Global Entry line to get in.
