How did you efile with no spouse SSN?

My spouse is American and has had a SSN for decades. I’ve had a SSN  for 14 years.  Perhaps you are thinking of somebody else in this thread.

I am in a similar situation, AOS for spouse, received date January 2022.  No ssn yet, still waiting for the EAD/AP.  Spouse has no income since entering US.

Would filing as MFS affect the interview process? since I would only be taking the Petitioner's MFS return and not the beneficiary's?

No.

I e-filed MFS with an accountant.  I believe he uses TaxAct, which I think you can also use without an accountant.

My USC spouse used TaxAct for tax year 2020 -- it did NOT allow e-filing MFS with spouse listed as NRA.  While it did allow typing "NRA" on the 1040, when it was time to submit, TaxAct said the 1040 was not eligible for e-filing.  My spouse is a W2 employee, no complications about taxes other than NRA spouse at that time.  No idea if it's the same with their 2022 tax software.  We never used TaxAct after that experience.  Felt scammed after paying around $100 for the federal+state bundle, then having to paper-file everything anyway.

Yep… (in my experience/filing 6 years in a row) you can’t e-file with an NRA spouse. We tried multiple tax softwares and had to paper file every time.

I'm also checking if there is an electronic way to file as MFS, I came across a software called Sprintax but would love to see if anyone has tried it?

Are you going to file a 1040NR because you are not a US citizen or LPR who files a 1040?

I'm a US citizen, my wife is neither a US citizen or LPR, I'm trying to figure this out, it looks like I will have to do paper filing which is something new to me, so I really don't know yet what forms need to be filed.

The sprintax you are interested in is not for US citizens. It is only for Non-resident aliens working in the US, like on a work visa.

Paper filing is easy but takes longer to process. Do you use software for doing tax returns? I know TurboTax guides you. There is a print option for only forms needed for filing and instructions where to mail specific to your address. Also anything that goes to the IRS will have an “attachment sequence” box in the top corner.

You only mail forms or schedules that have this in the corner. Arrange in numerical order. Everything else is just worksheets or things to keep  for your records.IMG_3217.PNG.ca10e05de2a25c599a1c928713d2f46b.PNGIMG_3428.thumb.PNG.18aee2a8e45d559325e833c209eae78a.PNG

Thanks a lot for educating me on this. I do use Turbotax, I'm planning to use it again with the paper filing, I'll follow your tips. Thanks again.

Turbo tax will generate a page telling you where to mail when you say no to efiling and proceed to filing by mail. Those “Thank you for using TurboTax” print outs of course are not mailed. Just the forms with the attachment sequence. Some forms could be multiple pages so include the whole form, even though the attachment sequence only appears on the first page.
