It's about encouraging people to buy things locally. That is the reason for the regions.

ok i wonder if CVS photo lab can do it

this just sucks, my VCR is brand new, so is my dvd player, i was hoping it would detect PAL

It's not a question of detecting a different format. The TVs actually cycle at a different rate here vs Europe.

Hope the conversion place works out.. we left a lot of video tapes behind instead of paying to convert them :(

I don't see how converting it to DVD will help as far as watching it on the TV...it will still be a different format after its converted to DVD (Region 2, etc). You will probably need a multi-regional VCR/DVD/TV set-up in order to do so (the TV also has to be able to pick up the different regions usually).

Your computer should be able to play the DVD after you have it converted, however, but unless you have a region-free program on your computer, you can normally only change the region "X" number of times (different from computer to computer) and then it won't change back (to be able to watch US formatted) and it will be locked in the last one you changed it to. You can add a program to your computer so you won't have to worry about it and it will change back and forth automatically unlimited number of times (it just works in the background and reads whatever region is used).

Well when i took the tape down to the guy at this place, i specifically told him "its from romania, its PAL, it wont play on my VCR, if converted can i watch it on MY vcr and TV at home?" he said, yup, give him a day to have it taken care of. and he knocked off 3$ because i brought in my own AMERICAN tape. :)

Im just so excited about this, i havent seen my fiance in a year and 2 months, and it will be so good to see him MOVE, cuz on webcam it sucks, its sooooooooooo slow. Plus i want to see us there together, memories :)

im so excited!!! :luv:

This was such a great idea of his, it took him a year, but it was great :)

Wow, over a year? I´d die! I haven´t seen my fiance for 2 months and I can´t wait to be with him! Ever since we started dating we see each other every 6 months, not a day more! And it´s SO hard, imagine over a year, wow!

This is actually gonna be the first time we stay longer than 6 months without seeing each other, ´cus till the process is done and I am ready to move it will have been at least 7 months since we last saw each other.

When i moved to Romania to be with him, and lived there for a year, he kept telling me his biggest fear was me coming back to the US for any reason, and not coming back to romania. Well i kept saying "nah nah that wont happen, and if it does only for a month or so"! me and my big mouth. He knocked me up and i came back to the states for proper medical care  and since then, spending all my money on immigration stuff, supporting 2 kids, just dont leave alot of money to travel

oooooooo i just cant wait to see him, on tape and walking off that plane :)

Would a homemade dvd even be coded with a region?

And congrats Ionescu! I'm sure you can't wait!!
