Hello,

I am hoping someone has had experience with a situation like this. My dad is adjusting status to green card from visitor visa form family based. Biometrics have been completed but EAD is taking to long. He has the 797c from immigration.

Is it possible for him to get a drivers license before he has EAD? Can he get temporary one? If anybody has experience please let me know. thanks

It is highly dependant on the state you're trying to get the DL from, since they all have different rules. I personally was able to get a DL (Wisconsin) with the I-797c, limited to one year of validity (but can be renewed). Here, the trickier bit is having an SSN, which not everybody has. But again, the requirements vary depending on location.

Best advice would be to look up the specific requirements on your state's DMV website. Good luck!

Did you have a SSN when you went to get your license? I live in Illinois, but haven't been able to get any information on the website. It is very generic

Yeah, I did, but as far as I know there are no TVDLs in my state.

This link for Illinois full DL seems helpful https://www.dmvusa.com/statelink.php?id=197

TVDL here. Depending on when he entered, the 12-month residency will either be easy or impossible to prove. https://www.ilsos.gov/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_tvdl7.pdf
