What document to show employer?

Timeline

Hello. I have a 10 year Permanent Resident card along with a valid Texas Driver License and a Social Security card that says ‘VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION’. This was issued after I had my EAD. have not got a chance to update my Social Security Card to the unrestricted. Social Security Administration being closed due to COVID-19. 
 

Do I present my Permanent Resident card to my employer for 1-9 or Texas Driver License and Social Security Card since they may also run it on E-Verify?

You can present just your GC or all three.

True. SSN is required on I-9 form.

try to make appointment now with SSA. SSA is not closed ( at least in my state its not close). covid-19 is not a reason for SSA to close for 2 years

Last time I checked they weren’t doing the service I wanted. I will check again.

If unrestricted SSN go with that and DL. That’s all I ever used - never showed my GC.

The law says you the employee can decide what documents to show.  You employer is not permitted to dictate what documents you show.  
 

Your green card is the sole value List A document you need to show.   A List A document is a document that shows both identify and work authorization.  Green card, US passport, EAD, etc.  
 

You don’t need to present a  List B document (identity-only documents) and a List C document (work authorization-only document).  
 

Your DL is a valid list B document.  Your SS card because it is annotated   with “… DHS … “ is an invalid list C document.
 

 If you present your SS card together with  your green card, you run  the risk of your employer (illegally) terminating you on your day of hire. 
 

My advice is to not confuse your employer.  
 

Do not fill out I-9 until your first day of work.  Do complete I-9 on your first day of work. It is your most important work task on the first day of work.  


You should eventually get a clean SS card.  Someday your green card or US passport (if you naturalize) will be expired and you might be stuck.

So my SS card that says ‘DHS…’ is invalid with DL? It doesn’t say ‘NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT’.

 

So NEVER show SSC with PR Card?

 

I thought showing DL and SSC is the most common that most potential employee show?

 

I will be applying for U.S Citizenship next year and the PR card is good for 10 years from 2020.

Your current SS card is  a not a valid list C document.

Most employees are USA citizens and most USA citizens don’t have passports or passport cards. I’d say the List C document that most USA citizens present is a toss up between an unannotated SS card and USA birth certificate.

 

Also “potential” is incorrect.  Only employees need to show I-9 documents.  
 

It’s an interesting trivia question, but not relevant to you.
