Hi all,

I’ve got my interview and medical soon, and provided it all goes well! I was wondering what peoples experiences were when entering the states for the first time.

I usually travel through Dublin using the pre clearance and go in to NY. I’m not sure if this would be a sensible option or do I need to go direct to a airport state side and present myself to an officer there.

thanks in advance and sorry if this is a silly question, it’s all a bit confusing!

  • No problem when doing it this way

The US Preclearance (USCBP) facility at Terminal 2 in Dublin Airport is a purpose built facility that allows US bound passengers to undertake all US immigration, customs and agriculture inspections at Dublin Airport prior to departure.

One of our trips we Precleared in Canada.  I have also precleared in the Bahamas and UAE

you can see the experiences of other people who precleared in Dublin at the link above - there is no technical reason why you cannot do this. My own personal experience is that I have generally found the Dublin PoE staff to be stricter with questioning that the average PoE staff on the US mainland. However, since you have been through Dublin PoE before, I'd say go by your own experience :)

I’d clear in Dublin as I like to get critical tasks accomplished.  You will be an LPR before you set foot in the USA and thus can enjoy the flight having put behind any angst about the POE process.

No you don’t need to go to a state side airport and see a CBPO.

i like the preclearance as you don't have to hurry to catch a connecting domestic flight in the US

i always feel rushed to go thru customs and onto the next plane

Hi thanks for that!

I’ve gone through Dublin more times than I can count but it has progressively gotten harder and harder. With me almost missing two flights and having my bags taken off then having them delivered to me in the states a few days later! I’ve always gotten through in the end. Though I always assumed this was just because I was visiting my US spouse and justified the reasoning for the intense questioning. Would this be the same as going through with an IRI in my passport or would it be, for lack of a better term, ‘easier’?

more security when on tourist visa / they look for documents (birth certificate,  school records and anything else)  that might indicate u will come and adjust to stay

IR1  already will live here and has gone thru security checks ,  medical exam and document reviews that u wouldn't believe

so, yeah,  big difference

Fair enough! Thanks for that

I think I’ll go through Dublin when the time comes then! Get the hard part done before I set foot in the US

ps- thanks for linking the POE reviews, I’m still new to navigating this website!

I entered on K1 in Chicago and tbh it was one of the easier times I've had. As @JeanneAdil states, given your visa category you already have immigrant intent and have proven this by going through the IR1 process. So, I would guess it would be easier on the whole.

I always wondered with Dublin if the PoE staff were stricter as they suspected that people may use it as an "easy" back door into the US...like if you're going to something "questionable", better to be sent back to Europe from Ireland as opposed to all the way from the US. But that is speculation on my part, albeit based on my experience of more rigorous screening there than elsewhere.

have to also add that I have been watching youtube for suspicious people and smuggling In UK (Manchester,  Gatwick),  Brazil,  US and other airports / all customs must be getting harder

when someone fits a whole adult woman behind the dashborad of a car, to come in at Mexico border , u gotta wonder what else ?

Yeah, that’s true!
my experience with Dublin has always been good but also kinda scary? I did stop going direct to NY because if I got told no I didn’t want to have an 8 hour trip back, also the mental toll that would have would be extremely painful. Excited to see my wife to be turned back, I couldn’t fathom.
so I guess that part is true maybe, but I never understood why it was perceived as being more strict. But having gone through Chicago once I was shocked at how fast I was sent through! Who knows!

Yeah makes sense having the IR1 should make it pretty clear what I’m there for lol.

I just want everything to go as smoothly as possible and enjoy my trip!

chicago is easy and for us qatar air use to have a flight from morocco to chicago

for me London was not freindly and i would choose Fort Lauderdale over Miami

and don't trust the tax drivers in NYC

Entering via Dublin with my K1 visa in hand was way simpler than going on the visa waiver.

It was also nice to have that immigration processing all over and done with so at the end of my 8 hour flight I could just grab my bags and go 'home' without any more worry.  Would definitely recommend going via Dublin for that reason alone.
