dex013 says it best...

"Yes, in the fifties the planet was warming. In the seventies it was cooling and there were worries widespread glaciation (in our CURRENT ice age. yes, an ice age). Its called a cycle.

A single large volcanic eruption can put more green house gases into the atmosphere than we can in a year.

I'm all for cutting back on pollution. Just not a fan of junk science and Al Gore's eco-terrorism.

Lets focus on improving the environment in an economical manner and not panicking about wild guesses."

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

People used to think the world was flat, then they thought it was round. I guess that means that it must follow that in a few years, people will think the world is flat again, right?

We are talking about climate cycles, not human ignorance.

Its not ignorance, just a lack of scientific understanding. Do you seriously think that climate scientists today are just following short term trends? Scientific knowledge increases with time, as does wisdom. In the 50s and 70s, understanding of the climate and the ability to model it was significantly more primative than today.

My point was, that just because people got it wrong in the past, doesn't mean they're getting it wrong now.

This is a specious argument. Regardless of what occurs naturally, we are producing excess CO2 on top of what is produced naturally, and the amount we're producing is not insignificant.

Hmmm... Ignorance IS the lack of understanding. That is the definition.

al gore sure reinvented himself, didn't he? and stole the green movement like it was his own! being "green" was around long before he ever came along. people are so freaking trendy now with their green cars, green houses...where were they before al gore came along?

and i thought this "global warming" was debunked countless times by scientists. i've read his entire film was debunked actually....

amazing what a little media plugging can do for someone!

How is it specious? Go tell the volcanoes to comply with Kyoto, see if they listen.

We can always grant the planet an exemption, just like we did to China, India and Brazil. After all, if Kyoto explicitly exempts you from the limits, then the greenhouses gases you produce no longer contribute to global climate change.

Ain't bureaucracy grand?

Na, just sell the volcano some carbon offsets!! AlGore would be glad to sell them!

Using textbook ice-age science alone, debunked a long time ago.

At peak glaciation, there were ice sheets 1 km thick where the Chesapeake Bay now is--an Arctic ice sheet about 6.5 times current size (and Antarctic about twice as large as current--leading to a total of about 3.5 times current ice-sheet).

The sea-level rise from the recession of those huge sheets was at most 40'--yet Gore claims that the current icecap melting would translate to a rise of over 200'. BTW, this 40' includes thermal expansion of water as well as melting--how would 1/3 of the original ice-sheet contribute more sea-rise than the two thirds already gone?

"...In the seventies it was cooling and there were worries widespread glaciation (in our CURRENT ice age. yes, an ice age)..."
Global cooling in general can refer to a cooling of the Earth. More specifically, it refers to a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth's surface and atmosphere along with a posited commencement of glaciation. This hypothesis never had significant scientific support, but gained temporary popular attention due to press reports following a better understanding of ice age cycles and a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s.

Earth as a whole has not been cooling in recent decades, but is in a period of global warming...

Concern peaked in the early 1970s, partly because of the cooling trend then apparent (a cooling period began in 1945, and two decades of a cooling trend suggested a trough had been reached after several decades of warming), and partly because much less was then known about world climate and causes of ice ages. Although there was a cooling trend then, it should be realised that climate scientists were perfectly well aware that predictions based on this trend were not possible - because the trend was poorly studied and not understood... However in the popular press the possibility of cooling was reported generally without the caveats present in the scientific reports.

While he was barely floating in science (about his "climatology": he took a total of TWO natural science courses in college--and did not do impressively in either; so his work on anything is a bit like "Calvin and Hobbes" math).
