I am a US citizen married to a Russian citizen. Together we have 1 biological daughter and she has two Russian citizen sons. Our I-130 petition was just approved in USCIS and now has moved to NVC. We are in Russia waiting on the process to finish but with the current situation it is not safe for us to continue to wait here in Russia. What will be the situation if we travel to the US Mexico border and ask for political asylum?

Of course your spouse can travel to Mexico-US border and apply for asylum. This will have nothing to do with your ongoing petition. However whether the asylum gets approved or not is a different scenario. It all depends. Imagine the next in line applying for asylums are those Ukranians. Who would be more trustworhy in terms of nit being safe in their home country.

If possible, it would be best to go to a third country to wait.  "We" would not be applying for asylum. Your spouse would be.  Just a nit pick there.  If you are waiting abroad with her, try Turkey or another country she can be admitted to.  You could then apply to have the interview there and may get accepted.
