I have just experienced a similar undisciplined child in restaurant scenario - not only that, the kid had little wooden sticks in his mouth (that you use to stir coffee with) and was running around - he then sat on a chair next to my table and started chewing on the sticks which he could have choked on or given him splinters. the parents were oblivious and seemed to think this was acceptable. unbelievable.

Heh; children are pretty much fashion accessories or status symbols for a lot of people nowadays.

I don't like it either, but people nowadays are raising the most selfish, self-centered children EVER. It's not the kids' fault; it's the parents' fault! Kids are kids.

I agree with that for sure. Joel and I strive hard to make sure our daughter doesn't become one of those kinds of kids and I think we're succeeding. Right now, she's very loving and thoughtful, even though she has her moments as all kids do I'm sure. At the same time though, she isn't selfish nor self-centered like a lot of kids we see out and about. Working with some of these selfish and self centered kids at school is what drives us to raise our daughter differently.

agree.. what happened to the discipline of the old days? now i see kids telling their folks they are dumb or kids in the grocery store crying cuz they didn't get a candy bar, yelling and jumping, making a scene, and the parents don't seem a little bit embarrassed or even bothered to discipline the kids.. man if I pulled one of those rants when I was a kid, it was either ####### whoopin @ home, or they'd just leave me there crying and 'hide'.. i neved did it again lol..

Parents that don't care tune their kids out. With toddlers it's a bit different...when my daughter was a toddler and she got fussy, I went home. It usually meant she needed a nap or was hungry...or both. When they get older it's ridiculous. You'd think that by the time they're 3 or 4 momma or daddy would have taught them something about how to act in public! Then there's the older ones that act like brats in public...Oi Vey!

When I was a kid if we misbehaved at the supermarket or any other public place, we were in for it as soon as we got home....and we knew it. My parents didn't make empty threats. If they said we were going to get a whupping, a whupping we got. We had to earn our pocket money, too; I started getting an allowance when I was about 9-10 and it was the princely sum of fifty cents a week. I didn't grow up in the 1950s either; I was born in 1975! If I wanted something I had to save up to get it, and I could earn more by doing more chores than what were assigned to me; if we didn't do our chores we didn't get our allowance, and mom stuck to her guns even if we begged and pleaded. She was like...no, you didn't EARN it! If I wanted a book, too bad...save up your fifty cents a week or check it out from the library! We couldn't get away with calling our parents names, either. I can't remember if I ever did but if I did, I definitely would have gotten a whupping.

By the time I was in high school I got $5 a week spending money and once I got my car I got another $5 a week for gasoline, which was just enough to get me to and from school five days a week. Once in a while my parents treated me to a full tank of gas but they weren't going to pay for me to cruise around; they bought a clunker for me when I was 16 so I could take my brother to school; mom didn't want us riding the bus and it was out of the way for both of my parents to take us to school, so it was a convenience thing for them rather than a gift for me. I didn't get to take the car with me to college for the first two years.

My brother and I aren't perfect people but we at least know the value of a dollar and we work our butts off. We know life isn't handed to you on a silver platter and though we may whine from time to time about how hard life is...because it IS hard...we do put our noses to the grindstone. Everyone moans every once in a while; it's normal. :luv:

That is the exact same way that I was raised in the UK too. Although I did not get a car bought for me even as a convenience thing. There was no need to do that in the UK we had a decent bus service that got us where we needed to go. Although I do see that it is almost a necessity here in the states.

My parents did not allow us to use public transportation alone when I was growing up; Dallas was much more violent in those days. However, had I been allowed to take the DART bus to school I could have; it picked up one block away from my parents' house and dropped off about 2 blocks away from my old high school so it would have been possible...and cheap! Plenty of kids at my high school rode the DART bus to and from school. We also had school buses but after I was assaulted on the bus in sixth grade, my parents refused to allow either my brother or I to ride the school bus because they felt that there was not enough supervision on the bus. We have bullies here too, unfortunately.

A car is mostly a necessity in the USA but Dallas is making a massive effort to concentrate its urban centers to facilitate biking, walking, or using public transportation. We have light rail now that is extremely well-placed for large segments of the population; whoever planned it was brilliant and really knows their stuff. I haven't had a chance to use the light rail because the nearest line is several miles to the east of me but if I lived in Plano or Richardson and worked in downtown Dallas, I could use the light rail to get to work instead of my car for less than what it would cost me to take the bus from my old house in York to the city center. I think that's awesome. Dallas doesn't get any credit for the efforts it is making and I think that's really sad. Oh well; maybe someday people will notice.

Chores = allowance? NO WAY at my house. Chores is part of living in the house, it's being part of the family. We didn't have allowance, but when we needed something, new clothes, we're at the right age for a new bike, etc., then my parents would buy it for us.

And there was no such rule as "it's x-mas so we need to flood the kids with presents". It was a little present to each, so we wouldn't be the only kids without one, but it wasn't big 'cus we got presents whenever we deserved, my parents could afford, it seemed allright by them. My b-day is 2 weeks after x-mas, so I always got ONE present for both.

They never got us to believe in Santa Claus either, so there wasn't that thing about "we have to buy her something 'cus she'll think Santa doesn't care for her".

Also, mom was never my driver, in the city I lived in in Brazil, busses are a common thing to use, and she got my older brother to teach me how to use them at the age of 9, so I could get to and from school on my own. To and from my English course on my own, and to and from ballet on my own.

And these days if a parents smack their kids in the ####### for being naughty (not too hard or to hurt, btw) there comes the judge and it's all wrong, you can't touch your kid, etc. I got my spanking, my brothers got their spanking, ears pulled for leaving clothes all over the place, etc. We're fine, we're not violent, we're not criminals, we're not traumatized and we love our mother very much, thank you.

That is the problem in the UK it is not cheaper to use public transport that using your car, when you take convenience into account also.

some kids are raised with a high sense of entitlement

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I think some people are putting unreasonable, adult expectations on a 19 month old child. Short of duct tape, I seriously doubt there was anything the mother really could have done. Kids that age are irrational, unpredictable, and have zero control over their emotions. Stopping some stupid chanting could have quickly degraded into a kicking, screaming hell meltdown. Mother probably thought she was doing everyone a favor by choosing not to pick that battle with her child.

I fail to see how it is that big of a deal in the first place what the kid was doing or saying. Annoying yes, but not worth turning around over.
