I'm filing Married Filing Separately (I do not want to file MFJ and I know it may reduce my refund) and I have the following questions.

1) I used TurboTax to prepare and print my taxes. Can I strikethrough the "placeholder ssn" and write "NRA" or does it have to be whiteout first?

2) Do I need to attach my 1099 forms to the Federal and State returns?

3) My state return asks for my Spouse's name. Strangely, Turbo Tax did not automatically fill that part in (it's filled for the Federal return). Should I manually write it in for the State return?

This is the first time I'm mailing it in. I'm hoping I can just get a Fedex envelop and Fedex overnight certify delivery it to them.

1.  I would use white-out to remove the place holder SSN, then hand write "NRA".  Never give info which could be misinterpreted.

2.  If mailing them, I would.  Although it is not stated on the tax form itself (it used to be), the 1040 instructions say to attach copies of the 1099s and W-2 to the return.

3.  Check with a tax pro in your state.

I checked and it says you don't need to attach any 1099 which does not have Federal Tax Withholding and does not have State Tax Withholding respectively. The W-2's however definitely need to be attached.

Why not just delete the placeholder? Leave the spouse SSN field blank. TurboTax will nag you to fix it, but you can ignore and still go to the print option and “print for filing”.

EDIT: I want to add that is how an installed on your home computer works. Not sure if online is aggressive about not letting you print until you fix everything they say. Do try it.

I wish I had done that...I thought it wouldn't allow me to print it, I guess now I know.

Did you try just typing it in?  Go the the forms view, find that page and fill in.

(I am speaking from my knowledge of how Federal TurboTax works and assuming the forms view would be available in a state return as well. We don’t have a state income tax)

How much does that cost?  You can get the post office to add tracking to a first class envelope for about $.90 so you know it got delivered.

No I quoted your original that never got a response.. “3) My state return asks for my Spouse's name. Strangely, Turbo Tax did not automatically fill that part in (it's filled for the Federal return). Should I manually write it in for the State return?”

I wondered if you had tried the forms view to type in the name on the TurboTax State software. I see now maybe you mean manually type in and my head was going to thinking you wanted to  hand write in. My misunderstanding.

Were you able to e-file with TaxAct?  We used it for our 2020 taxes, but it didn't let us e-file.  Felt like we paid $$ just to be able to type in "NRA", instead of hand-writing it 😒
