In 2021, you filed taxes for tax year 2020.  In 2022, you will file for tax year 2021..You must file as married as you were married as of 31 Dec, 2021 ..You won't file taxes for tax year 2022 until 2023. You will have to submit most recent tax year filed at the time you submit financial documents to NVC and the consulate.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Oops sorry I got confused. Yes, I will be filing for 2021 sometime end of this month or early April. The problem is that if it goes to the NVC stage before that, would I be sending them 2020 and prior?

Correct.....although they could still ask for 2021 taxes since processing will take up to 3 months.

since u are not at the NVC stage yet (per your comments) u need to get those 2021 tax returns done ASAP

April 18th is coming up fast and although the 2020 may be ok at NVC if within the next month u can pay both fees and complete the AOS ,  u are still going to have to update all information with 2021 tax returns for the interview

following is the IRS site to help with the information so u can decide to file either MFJ or MFS (either is ok but u are not single)

Yes, but expect the 2021 return to be asked for at the interview.  Best solution and practice is to file the 2021 tax return as soon as possible. Giterdun.

I got married last year in April 2021 (already filed taxes in February 2021).

I haven't filed my taxes for 2022 yet. If it goes to the NVC stage before that (it looks like it will), what tax forms should I submit? 2021 and earlier? I ask because my filing status for those years are single.

If I may ask what is preventing you from filing your 2021 taxes now? I’m going through the same process and I have filed 2021taxes already and my lawyer is in the process of submitting all the documents to NVC. If you can file now to save unnecessary waste of time with NVC
