Hi All

Admin please move this to right place if I am at wrong forum.!

We are planning to relocate from UK to USA. Could someone please advice how to take finance with us.! Do we have to open bank account in any international bank.? Any idea.?

I have been banking with HSBC since 2005 and that made it easy for me to repatriate money from previous country to the US. HSBC has global premier services but maintenance is quite hard and ties up your money…

I found it reasonably easy to open an account pre-green card with a US bank ready for when I moved.  They didnt need an ITIN either, which is a pain to get.  I reached out to several banks and they all were easy to accommodate.  Citi have a London office, HSBC others have mentioned (but they are leaving the US I hear), Chase/JPMorgan is who I went with.  They got me debit card and cheques (checks) too.

When I moved I transferred everything (including ISA’s which were flattened) apart from pension (which I was advised to leave in place).

I’m having a pretty difficult time opening a bank account as I haven’t got any utility bills in my name. Make sure you get one of your bills into your name with your US address. They wanted a SSN from me with I do have.

Once you overcome the US bank account hurdle, opening without a SSN and proof of address is difficult, the best/cheapest option is to use Revolut or Wise (Formerly transferwise) to send your money from UK bank to US bank. I sent £500 from Revolut last week and it cost 98p in fees, so scaling up I don't think you can beat that cost. I'll be sending all of my UK money over just before I relocate next month.

The added benefit of these accounts is that you can use them in the US with no charges on transactions, so won't have to carry cash everywhere.

OFX. Several percentage points better exchange rates  than even the top big banks, zero fees for transfers over $1500, very fast transfers, 24 hr on call agents who assist you if needed.   We used it for all our transfers .. house sale, savings, superannuation.

I second OFX, been using them to transfer money since before I moved here. Customer service is really good and responsive and the exchange rate is consistently good.

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey
